Faces of the NHL lockout

  • Article by: MICHAEL RUSSO , Star Tribune

Millionaire NHL owners and players can bide time as the lockout drags on. That's a luxury others who make a living off the game can't afford.

Very nice way to handle this story Mike Russo, by breaking it down by various constituencies impacted by the strike. Well done.

Millionaire owners and players and guess who's suffering the most from the strike? This should be required reading for anyone who insists that the public pay for facilities for professional sports. It would be far better to lose a couple of sports rather than be held hostage by them. If the league and/or the players owned the arenas there would be more pressure on them to settle in order to safeguard their investment in them.

Great point Rossberg, thank you. Additionally, hockey (and football) are dangerous, dementia causing, drug encouraging games that we can only hope die under their own weight. Anyone associated with the two blood sports should run away now. If you stay in the industry, even as a fan, you may as well check your conscience at the door.

When they finally come back I would love nothing more than the fans to strike! Don't go to games and play the inflated cost to see them, don't buy anything and don't watch them on TV so their ratings stink. They don't seem to understand that this is a 3 way operation to make this run, with the fans being the 3rd spoke. Without us there is no league and they don't seem to give a rats A$# about us. ........

DH97, I was just in the NYC Reebok Hockey Store. I go the NYC for work and the store quite a bit being a fan/STH. Lowest traffic by far of all the times I have been in there. They had a sale going on, buy 2 hats, get one free. Sounds great but all I could think of was I don't want to support the NHL/NHLPA. At the same time, I find the people in the store seem to be fans, or they are pretty good faking-it, They need the work, so I compromised for them and purchased just one hat.

Luckily for those who make only $9 per hour, there are hundreds of $9 per hour jobs available out there.

It is well past the time to discontinue all public subsidies for all professional sports. Let the fans pay the full price of supporting their millionaire athletes and entertainers.
