The state of Florida will soon be sponsoring its first-ever Python Challenge, an open-to-the-public, monthlong Burmese python hunting contest in four of the state's wildlife areas.

Nothing says "safe" like a half dozen armed Florida rednecks with high powered rifles in an air boat, flying around hunting snakes for big money... And nothing says entertainment like four or five dozen armed air boats vying with each other for swamp turf... lubricated and ready to get some snake.

Love it! Florida is getting over runned by these snakes. This is going to be a great idea. Quike frankly, they should be putting bounties on the snakes. That'll irradicate them quickly.

It sure sounds like more fun then hunting in Minnesota where you need an attorney by your side to clarify all the rules and regulations

I hope someone makes a documentary about this.

This story reminds me of the Simpson's episode involving "Whacking Day."

Kill off some non-native species, bring in some money by selling permits, build excitement with cash prizes. It's not the worst idea I've ever heard, but it is another reminder of why I'd never want to live in Florida. New York should try the same thing for rats, Mississippi River states for invasive carp, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Yeah they should make a reality show out of this..."Florida Bubbas vs Burmese Pythons". Maybe from all the cash the state raises they'll be able to afford some good dependable voting machines. I'm betting there'll be a few Bubbas with gunshot wounds (or worse) from this one.

I see this ending well (for the pythons and a couple of gators).

This is a really good idea. Burmese Pythons are destroying the Everglades and something must be done. I've been planning a trip to Florida to kill pythons, too bad I can't make it for the contest.
