Have we learned nothing through history? Let's just fast-forward 10 years, when this issue is over and accept reality today that gay marriage will eventually be universally accepted.
Some possible rulings on this OTHER than okaying gay marriage or denying it as a right: 1. They could rule the entire institution of civil marriage unconstitutional as the tax code then violates the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment. 2. They could rule that marriage is unconstitutional as a governmental entity because it is 1st and foremost a religious institution and violates the "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" clause of the 1st Amendment. Bill G.
Wow fireworks are going to come early this year as the Red States are going to flip their collective lid when SCOTUS invalidates their state consitutional bans on gay marriage. Methinks we have not heard the last of "secession" talk.
This should be a VERY short deliberation on the part of the justices assuming they are worthy of wearing those robes. I can't even imagine what the legal justification the argument AGAINST gay marriage could possibly be referring to. Then again, I'm not a lawyer, but I doubt there is any legal justification for saying one group of people (heterosexuals) can do something but another group (homosexuals) cannot. I would LOVE to hear this argument.
Their ruling should also clean up the present legal problem of people in states where gay marriage is legal moving to states where it's not. As things stand, the marriage won't be legal or offer legal protections if the couple moves to a state where it's not recognized. Within the decade, gay marriage will be the law of the land, though.

There not. All Americans have the same, exact rights and restrictions of marriage. Case closed.
sullivan9999, Universally accepted? You mean universally forced down everybodys throat. Universally accepted? Never. Please speak for yourself.
AirForceguy Please tell why I can't apply for the United Negro College Fund? I must be in the wrong group of people.
It's not a matter of if same-sex marriage will be legal but rather a matter of when. The stage is set, however, that it can be legal throughout the country sometime this summer. This is good news as we can then move on to solving real problems not just made up ones.
I would much rather them scrape all provisions for married couples than making a mockery of marriage for the sake of letting marriage stand for any two people cohabiting. So in the end, it is all about the money. Can't wait to see how this will impact the coffers for social security, medicare, health benefits and the like.
