Republicans objected to a U.N. treaty that urges nations to strive to ensure that the disabled enjoy the same rights as their fellow citizens, and warned that this treaty could pose a threat to U.S. sovereignty.

A treaty that urges doesn't force anyone to do anything, so it isn't like we are dictating to the rest of the world what to do. And how in the world would urging other nations to provide their disabled the same rights as they do the rest of their citizens be a threat to U.S. sovereignty?

Giving the UN any additional authority is a poor idea. Thanks to the GOP! Please cut our funding next.

Giving the UN any additional authority is a poor idea. <== THIS! Also, if we already have the ADA here in America, why in the world do we need to sign a treaty with the UN? Its up to those other nations to uphold the standards of the ADA- Not Ours. Its another power grab by the UN, and Obama is just all to happy to give away America's sovereignty

This was utterly disgraceful on the part of the GOP. They embarrass our country by not supporting a world-wide effort to help the disabled. This would not cost us one red cent or require anything from the US at all - even the ailing Dole and McCain were strongly in favor of signing the treaty. As it is, there are 156 other countries around the globe supporting it. The GOP should be ashamed of itself. This is unconscionable and these men need to lose their positions.

"Its another power grab by the UN, and Obama is just all to happy to give away America's sovereignty == And, apparently, so is former Senator Bob Dole. John McCain voted for this bill are you going to accuse him of wanting to give away "America's sovereignty too? I have never understood the Con's paranoia about the U.N. and this time they've really gone off the deep end. I imagine most of them would just as soon do away with the ADA as well. After all, we can't have the federal government mandating curb cuts or handrails in bathroom stalls.

What a shame that tea partiers like Inhofe from OK are actually proud of leading the charge against people with disabilities. Inhofe thinks the black helicopters will come from the UN and whisk kids with disabilities out of their home schooling parents' homes so that government bureaucrats can indoctrinate them. This ignorant man and 37 of his GOP colleagues should be ashamed - but Inhofe actually trumpets his "victory" on his website.

What a black eye for America. A treaty that urges other countries to follow our leadership in ensuring the rights of the disabled is voted down thanks to tea-party Republicans. Is there any more glaring proof that these Republican politicians have absolutely no empathy for those less fortunate than themselves?? How did we let such cold-hearted, paranoid people into the halls of power in our government?
