Maurer is two years younger and better, so this ups the value of Mauer from the Russell Martin baseline of $8.5 million. It's now $13 million. Being Mauer is better than either, it means the Twins are "overpaying" Mauer no more than $10 million. So folks need to quit thinking In terms of Mauer's contract putting theTwins in a $23 million hole. At best, they're over paying him $5 mil. Given Target Field, the Twins can easily cover that. Mauer's contract does not make it hard to sign free agents. It is no albatross.

Wow, if the BoSox are willing to overpay Napoli 13.3mil a year for having 1 career year 2 seasons ago, just think what they would've given up for Mauer, who's younger and has far more upside. Too bad the Twins didn't pursue Boston more ardently while the BoSox still had their beer goggles on.
