It is still early in the season and the Big Ten season will be brutal with so many good Big Ten teams. However, I am optimistic of the results this year and see bright things ahead for the Gopher basketball team. Wasn't long ago that the nattering nabobs of negativity were wanting to oust Tubby from coaching the Gophers. Hmmmm....isn't the same thing happening to another Gopher coach who has their team headed in the right direction? Why is that everybody wants results yesterday when they should know that it takes time to build a quality program when it's been down in the dumps?

The AP voters are out to lunch with a few of the rankings. For example, #5 Louisville loses to Duke by 5 pts and then barely squeaks by Illinois State by 3 pts (69-66) yet doesn't fall in the rankings. Meanwhile, #7 Ohio State loses to Duke by 5 pts and then blows out Northern Kentucky (70-43) and yet they fall 3 places (4 to 7).

FYI sek2undrstnd - It doesn't take major D1 hoops programs six years to "build a quality program." The naysayers have had every right to criticize Tubby's tenure at the U. This squad FINALLY looks a bit better/different this year, but I'll reserve judgement until they actually start beating teams that they're not supposed to beat. Florida State was a start though not anything to pound one's chest about. There's a lot of games left to be played this year, and Tubby's Big 10 record with the U is 38-52. Another sub-.500 B10 performance wouldn't be shocking in the least.

@sek2understnd, the stars happened to align this season for Tubby, especially in getting Mbakwe back for a near-unprecedented 6th year. If Tubby can parlay this season into building a foundation of sustained success, then this "nattering nabob" will stop harping on the coach. And lets see how the B1G season goes before anointing Smith as Coach of the Year.

I agree that given Tubby's lack of success at Minnesota and the consistent below .500 finishes of his teams in conference play, there is every reason to be cautious about getting too excited by the success of the 2012-13 edition just yet. Lets see where the team stands after the remaining two non-conference games and about half-way through the conference schedule before we get too excited about the lads and Tubby this year.

I'm sorry but those who think that "The Stars Have Aligned" this season for this to happen have forgotten Munson. players under Munson traditionally dribbled the ball into the corner and got trapped, just over half court same thing, couldn't effective double, couldn't run a back door cut, regularly got outrebounded and players got worse as they went along. I am not one of those who believes that Tubby is one of the top coaches in the country but if you can't see that he is worthy of coaching a SUB-major D1 program then you're not paying attention or simply don't understand basketball. GO GOPHERS

These rankings don't mean a lot early in the season like this, and the Big Ten is very very strong this year, so there will be some losses in the Big Ten, particularly on the road. But yeah, there are some good, veteran players on the team and I think we're looking at like a 4-6 seed in the NCAA tourney. Go Gophs.

sek2understand - What other Gopher coach has their team headed in the right direction? Cuz it ain't the football team. I was at the Michigan State game...89 yards of TOTAL OFFENSE in the game against a terrible Michigan State team. Not 89 yards runsing by one guy or 89 yards receiving by a guy...89 yards total offense against a bad MSU defense at home. Philip Nelson 10 of 19 for 61 yards and three interceptions. 2 wins in the Big ten in EACH OF THE past four seasons. They are really bad.

Tubby sucks - but there are good and veteran players on the team. So they will succeed. Tubby = 6th, 7th, 7th, 9th, 9th in Big Ten in first five years. Ouch.

@unlikesid, as an alum, basketball player, and fan of the Gophers since age 5, I understand the game and clearly remember the Monson years. Agreed, those were lean seasons no fan wants to go back to, but Monson did something (twice) that Tubby hasn't yet done, and that is finish above .500 in the B1G. The Gophers are fortunate to have Mbakwe this year, I don't think there's any question about that. Again, when Smith brings sustained success to this program--something he hasn't done--he'll have done his job.
