Souhan: Vikings winning on many fronts

This is an overachieving team, edging toward competence, and nice guys, too. Don't brood, fans.

My thought is that any negative feelings towards what the Vikings have accomplished this year come down to one player -- Christian Ponder. In a league where your long-term success is largely dictated by having a franchise quarterback in place, #7 has done little to make Viking fans believe he is that guy. Without a clear and competent guy at the QB position, Viking fans are obliged to feel they are once again destined to watch otherwise stellar talent wither on the vine. Quite frankly, we have seen this Monet too many times before......:(

This year cannot be placed on Ponder's shoulders. The loss of Harvin was the end of the Vikings passing game. Who do they have at receiver after Harvin? No one. Aromashado, is a cast off from the Bears who had one good season there. Jenkins was not even a second thought when the Falcons let him go. The Vikes picked up TE Carlson for some cash money and that has been a joke, not to mention the fact that Simpson, another off season signing, cannot stretch the field, let alone, catch a ball. Furthermore, I have my doubts when it comes to Musgrave's play calling.

Good point Souhan! Vikes have done well, especially when compared to last season. What a great, great rivalry - Vikes always play us tough. Although not the Packer's #1 rival; that is, always has been, and always will be the Bears - Vikings v Packers 2012 should be a great game. We're like brothers, and it's love/hate - we hate to lose to you, but we're pullin for you and we like to see you do well. When it's the Bears or the Vikes, records and talent really don't matter. This is The Black n Blue NFC Norse, baby. Our shared pride, and our shared heritage.

Good article. Now for the reality check. 1. Ponder isn't very good and it's highly unlikely he'll develop into a franchise quarterback. 2. After Peterson and Harvin, the Vikings have no offensive playmaking ability whatsoever. And Harvin is hurt. 3. The Vikings revamped secondary started the season pretty well, but have lapsed greatly over the past month. And they simply don't create turnovers. 4. It's unlikely the Vikings will win more than 1 game the rest of the season and will get destroyed by Green Bay just like they got destroyed by Chicago. 5. No matter what they do to improve, it's all a moot point until they find a legitimate franchise QB. In the NFL, if you don't have a QB, you don't have anything.

Nice guys finish last . Tony dungy was a great guy who did nothing in TB. H was fired and Grude came in and won Super Bowl the next year. Dungy got lucky in getting Manning so everyone this he is great. Fraiser is like him -great guy -average to below average coach. Poor judge of getting good staff, can't part with friends poor. - poor x's and o' man. Rehire him and Vikes will be steam that constantly teases us with playoffs and finishes 8-8 . If yup are truly rebuilding - needs to also include staff. Les will nt compete in this division.

Very well done column. I was edging towards negativity myself and this column provided a wonderful perspective. Thank you from a 14 year season-ticket owner. Go Vikes!

Good column....I think we were ready to jump on but the Tampa game was just a huge dose of reality. Then we were getting fired up again after the Detroit game, looking for them to come out of the bye rested and ready for the home stretch and they lay an egg! It's not whether they win or lose today, it's whether they are competitive.

No need to call for Frazier's firing Souhan? Really? Well can I at least text it?

@ltuffvesson, your right on with comparison...I have frequently thought the same thing about Leslie...AND I STILL THINK THE HEAD COACH IS ONLY AS GOOD AS HIS ASS-ISSTANTS....nuff said..
