It's cheaper for Menards to fly them in to Minot than hire local. I wonder if once the employees are there if they'll find better paying gigs in Minot and stay?
This story doesn't explain a big part of the problem of WHY so many of low paying jobs in ND are going unfilled! Because of the fracking boom, the cost of living has skyrocketed & even though they will pay a few bucks more you can't make up for the crazy prices & find a place to rent that isn't double the normal cost!
My Brother-in-law who lived in Bismarck worked in Beulah at the gasification plant 85 miles away.
When they were building the facility, several busloads of workers from the iron range would show up early Monday morning and then go back home Friday night.
You have to go where the work is
"A listing for a pizza delivery driver in Minot was advertised Thursday at $15 to $20 per hour, plus a $250 signing bonus." --- That really doesn't mean anything. I've seen delivery driver jobs in Minneapolis advertised at the same rate. The rate they advertise is usually minimum wage plus a tip estimate plus fuel reimbursement.
Why work at menards for 13 when papa johns pays 20.
Amazing that Papa John can pay so much when Obamacare is killing his business.
This is insane! They will pay their WI workers $13 an hour to work in Minot, fly them through MN, put them up in a hotel and fly them back at the end of the week. What aren't they telling here? Wouldn't it be better to offer $20 per hour for the 2.9% still without work or are there 2.9% unemployable people still living in MInot?
"Why work at menards for 13 when papa johns pays 20...." -- For me, that's an easy one -- because I don't want my car to smell like pizza!......lol
This seems foolish. It will cost them all the sales they would make just to fly in employees from Wisconsin and house them every week.
If Menards has the money to fly in workers from Wisconsin to Minot to staff the store, how much money is Menards making off their workers everywhere else? If I were a Menard worker, I would be asking for a raise and then cite this story.
