Hartman: Ponder stacks up vs. stars early stats

The Vikings' second-year QB doesn't have it all figured out yet -- and neither did Tom Brady.

Sid, if you'd stop regurgitating everything Spielman tells you in an effort to save his own job and actually conduct a little research you'd ascertain that Ponder's stats compare more favorably to the likes of Byron Leftwich, Matt Leinart, and Jason Campbell than they do Manning(s), Ryan, Brees or any other "star" QB Spielman is feeding you in hopes you write what he wants you to write about his personal project. If you want a really eerie comparison, though, compare Tarvaris Jackson's "early stats" with Ponder's. The comparisons are uncanny!

You can throw all the spin on the stats that you want, but even when he was supposedly playing "well" Ponder has shown absolutely no indication that he will be anything but a below average QB.

I like your optimism Sid but with road games at Green Bay and Houston and home games vs. Chicago and the Packers, it's quite an assumption to figure Ponder's totals based on the easier part of their schedule. In fact it's quite an assumption that he even stays healthy considering their upcoming schedule.

Hey Sid, he's not Tom Brady. Nor will he ever be...Brady is smart and confident and even was then...this kid ain't.

Manning threw for over 4,000 yards in his second season? And that compares to this bum? Hardly...not even close...this kid won't get anywhere near 4,000. How can you compare it Sid?

I think it would be unfair to pin last week's loss on Ponder's shoulders. Viking receivers dropped eight passes they should have caught. That said, I am mostly in agreement with Vikings fans who believe Ponder's fallen far short of the mark to this point. You can throw out all the stats you want Sid. But Ponder doesn't pass the eyes test.

Sorry to post this twice but it’s late and I mistakenly posted it first on your Greenway article. I’ve always liked Ponder and still have high hopes for him. But fans have no real way to compare him to other quarterbacks. How about giving Moose2 a shot at quarterback at some point this season when the circumstances seem right? Perhaps he will prove to be no Kaepernick, but at the very least fans would get a chance to see how he performs under game conditions. Quoting from the Sacramento Bee “Kaepernick and Bethel-Thompson were both mentored by Bay area quarterbacks coach Roger Theder. “Thompson reminds me of JimPlunkett”, Theder said “He’s got the same sort of tools, maybe a little quicker arm. He’s smart and tough.” Some have questioned his footwork. Yet the other #4 had slowed a little at 40 but a big heart and a big arm still made a pretty good combination. Moose1, other than the great #81, was Bethel-Thompson’s grandpa, Wilbur Thompson, who won the gold medal in the shot put in the 1948 Olympics.

Sid is right, the 'fair weather'fans are at it again. Ponder could be the second coming of Otto Graham and you wouldn't recoginize it!{sorry 'fans' for making you get out your research books} cut back on your game day beer consunption and give this young man a standing 'o' when he takes the field do what he's trying to do GROW-UP!!!!!

Team needs wide recievers an offensives line that can pass protect and an offensive coordinator. Improve any of those 3 areas and then judge Ponder.

Sid, how can you possibly say that Ponder is "on par" with Brady and Manning when his yardage and TD totals are WAY behind theirs? Are you saying that completion percentage is a meaningful QB stat? Maybe Ponders completion percentage wouldn't be so high if he actually threw the ball beyond the line of scrimmage?
