The fun part for you is the "expressions of appreciation"? But you don't want to buy this particular granddaughter anything she would actually appreciate? You sound like you are on a power trip grandma. The "fun part" should be making your grand kids happy--not fishing for obsequious thank-yous from them.

davethedog, I see you have the same mentality and maturity of the unappreciative granddaughter. Grandma isn't fishing for thank yous, she's looking for common courtesy. Perhaps you should take granddaughter shopping...sounds like you'd get along.

One Grandma to another, who enjoys those same experiences with my 10 grandchildren, here is my solution. Like you, I too have teens who want namebarnd clothing, items which are priced well above what Im able to spend. Taking 10 kids shopping is expensive, so I determine beforehand how much I can spend on each. Each child knows the amount, and is allowed to buy whatever that amount will buy, whether its one item, or several. Its their choice, and everyone is happy and thankful for the opportunity and gift of getting something they desire.
