Reality check: Those upbeat energy forecasts

Big Oil claims America could be nearly self-sufficient in energy by 2035. Gee, that's only 23 years from now. What could possibly go wrong with that forecast?

the United States does not have a national strategy that can "push the country toward more rational ways of providing energy to Americans." - - - Would that be a strategy of punishing 'bad' energy with taxes and rewarding 'good' energy with subsidies :)

it wouldn't happen with obama and his cronies in power. you need a republican administration and it will happen. natural gas is the key.

"Big Oil claims America could be nearly self-sufficient in energy by 2035. Gee, that's only 23 years from now. What could possibly go wrong with that forecast?" Thank you Washington for the beauracratic red tape that has lasted more than 20 years to get us where we should already be!!!

They fail to mention the US proven oil/gas reserves already discovered that dwarf all other countries' supplies. The problem is the enviro-radicals and liberals in government prevent us from tapping them. That is the real scandal. You can thank them for our ever-high gas and energy prices.

Here's one strategy I'd like to see implemented, stop using oil to heat homes. Oil is still the best source for "portable" energy. Many other good choices for home heating: natural gas, electric, propane, wood, coal, etc.

"farkelstein: it wouldn't happen with obama and his cronies in power. you need a republican administration and it will happen. natural gas is the key." ---- Natural gas is not the key. At least when the energy companies advertise it the way they are now. A most recent commercial (saw it yesterday) shows a cube and the facet then shows the drill pipe going down and the words "cement lined" very noticeable. That is seen for many seconds. Then the cube rotates to a facet with the drill pipe going horizontal and a lot of cracks are shown around the pipe's endpoint (the fracking location). That is seen for only 1/4 of a second. I wonder why? When I see the officers of these energy companies drinking groundwater that can be set on FIRE due to wrecking the bedrock below, then they can continue to say that fracking is not dangerous to the water supply.

rshackleford - [When I see the officers of these energy companies drinking groundwater that can be set on FIRE due to wrecking the bedrock below, then they can continue to say that fracking is not dangerous to the water supply.] *** You do realize that water you saw being set on fire was able to be set on fire decades before fracking was ever used. Do a bit of research on the topic instead of falling for a scare tactic used in the "documentary" Gasland.

Gandalf, I am glad you know this industry well (no pun intended). I haven't seen "Gasland." I do watch 20/20 and Dateline often though. In our obvious and similar interest of transparency and truth, please provide links to industry PDF files that contain the MSDS sheets for the fracking slurry that is pumped into the ground. That would be a good start. Thanks. BTW, what happens if the cement lining cracks? Are the cracks self-sealing or is the well filled completely with cement and millions in profit abandoned? Where can I obtain industry records and logs? OSHA?

Second, I thought we had government to ensure safety practices are being followed; you can hardly get upset with businesses or natural gas when it's government that is not providing you with safety information. I would contact OSHA and MSHA (Mining Safety and Health Administration) if you have concerns about fracking. If there is a health threat then I'm sure MSHA has a record of it and you can tell us all of the people who have died due to fracking.
