I guess I'm surprised that the total cost came in this low since Katrina topped out at 108 billion.
Please don't spend money to rebuild in these hazardous areas. And don't reissue insurance policies at taxpayer expense.
$42Billion is just a still less than criminal undocumented aliens cost New York Taxpayers over the past decade $45Billion ($4.5 billion per year for the city and state’s taxpayers).
Lochboxer: You are correct: According to the State of New York study this is still less than what New York Tax Payers have had to fork out to support undocumented immigrants over the past decade.
Fed dollars should be used to pay for infrastructure (roads, bridges, I could even agree with electric grid and cell systems). But schools, parks, individual costs, etc., are local issues and should be paid for by the locals. But these folks are only interested in how many fed dollars they can extract for the tax payers outside of NY.
most of the northeast is very liberal. It's very deserving.
Relative costs of living need to be accounted for in these types of recovery efforts/comparisons. If 100 houses were destroyed in rural Minnesota, the cost to rebuild will absolutely be much less than the cost to rebuild in Manhattan. That doesn't mean that there is any less devastation, and it doesn't mean that federal taxpayers should be on the hook for rebuilding expensive properties in NYC. Same goes for infrastructure...much more costly in NYC than in New York Mills. Long story short, it's hard to compare and we shouldn't be paying for rebuilding private properties, which is what insurance is for. Infrastructure, yes.
Why are taxpayers on the hook for peoplw who dont have the proper insurance? If you couldnt get flood insurance in areas that are apt to flood why did you buy/build there? NY is dripping with money. Let all the celebs and wall street bankers foot the bill.
