Oberstar to NTSB chief: Reconsider 35W bridge hearing

  • Article by: KEVIN DIAZ , Star Tribune

The Minnesota Democrat said there is skepticism about the NTSB board, because it voted not to hold a public hearing about the bridge. One will be held, he was told.

...I think another culprit might be Oberstar using all of the federal transportation money he's been pulling in to build bike trails and research public transit. Sure those would be nice to have, but shouldn't we make sure we can afford upkeep on what we already do have?

Its not the objectivity NTSB I question, I question Oberstar's objectivity. He's been foaming at the mouth and dancing on graves trying to blame everything republican since the day the bridge collapsed. Oberstar even yelled at NTSB for saying the design of the gusset plates was a key factor because god forbid the investigation wasn't done (and it didn't fit into Oberstar's bias). Oberstar needs to shut up and let the NTSB do their job and he needs to quit spending money on crap like bike trails in the middle of nowhere.

If he was really concerned, he would quit trying to have a dog and pony show for the press. If he was really concerned, he would be bringing home the pork for bike trails and other stuff that doesn't have anything to do with transportation. If he was really concerned, he would resign. That would be the best thing for the state of Minnesota .

Whether he is right in calling for this or not, it is going to look political to everyone and will accomplish nothing in the end except maybe make the party look stupid for trying. The above posters are right that Oberstar has been spending some of our tax dollars on his own pet pork projects and that is wrong no matter which party the guy is from. I am VERY tired of hearing how we cannot build more roads due to funds when we seem to have funds for things that do not benefit the state. Can a Democrat hate the left wing of his party and still be a Democrat anymore? Between the poor choices in candidates and the stupid issues the DFL has taken a part in, I truely wonder where the blue collar working class goes for political representation? (No righties, it is not in your party either) Can we start a common sense party, wait that would make too much sense.

The extremes of both parties (Dem & Rep) are off their rockers, that's why I'm a Libertarian.

Jimmy will be happy only when the NTSB comes out and says the cause of the bridge collapse was "low taxes". Since we only have the 5th hightest taxes in the country, this had to be the issue and how dare they suggest otherwise. I'm sure he agreed with their findings on the Exxon Valdez accident, etc, however. Picture boy for term limits.

Honeydog, I just feel like somehow the far left nutcases took over my party! Have been a union guy for a long time and am really upset that once again they are supporting the DFL when the actions of the DFL anymore are exactly the opposite of what the unions ever stood for. I am fighting within the union to try and get this stopped. I have stopped donating to my local DFL until they stop with the horrible candidates and "progressive" issues that are nothing more than the far left of the party pushing socialism which if anyone believes is a good idea, Oberstar has a bridge he would like to sell them.

Having a hearing would be a good thing. The key words are OPENNESS and TRANSPARENCY.

Does anybody know how Jim is using his vast influence to get that ancient, dangerous bridge in Stillwater replaced? I haven't heard him being a great advocate for a safer bridge that meets the post 1800's needs. Oh, sorry. His nutcase green friends who send him a lot of money each election cycle are opposed to progress in Stillwater. It might hurt a snaildarter or something. Different story on this bride I guess.
