Questions for those who know: What laws apply 13 miles offshore? Could he ignore all employment law? Is he basically his own nation? What crimes could be prosecuted and by who? The UN or the US?
Of all things!! To think about it, if I had the money I guess I would by the thing.. It is kind of funny that these things are for sale. Hope he has fun with it..
According to the UNCLOS agreements governing the international seas, (observed but not officially ratified by the US) the territorial boundaries of.a country extend 12 nautical miles (approx. 13 miles) from the coast. The short of it is, all US laws still apply.
zigurdskauls- The light tower is "about 13 miles off shore". You state that the territorial boundaries of the US only extend 12 nautical miles (approx. 13 miles) offshore. There is a very good chance this tower was intentionally constructed just outside of US jurisdiction for a reason.
The government should do more of this with their older structures/facilities. It will save money by not having to maintain them and will also bring cash in for the sale.
enjoy the renovation, i'm sure a 2 dollar bag of cement, delivered to said island would run upwards of $50 after shipping....
moretaxesnow - In my opinion, there is a much better chance that the tower was constructed just within the country's territorial boundaries for a reason. As in, we want this thing as far out as possible, but we still want it to be within the country...it is a government installation after all.
Cool! If for some reason his dreams/plans don't work at the very least he has a great story and he will learn a ton from the experience. The location does make the trip to Home Depot or Lowes for "a few things" a little more difficult but that just changes your thinking and planning. I hope that he is able to keep a journal or better yet a video journal / blog - it would be interesting to follow how this experience goes. There is no "failure" for this guy - it's a fun adventure with many lessons! Best of luck to you - I hope to hear more soon.
I want one!
