Georgia Tech is petitioning Big Ten also.

Big 10 doesn't make sense anymore and hasn't for more than a decade. Change the name — and leave the number out as more colleges are sure to seek entrance in the conference.

Too bad they passed on Missouri last year, that could have built up regional rivalry with Nebraska and Iowa (as well as be a reasonable drive from MN)

It won't be long berfore we are called the BIG 10+10 Conference. I did not want Penn State in but Nebraska makes sense. It should be a Midwest Conference but it all boils down to revenue. I would like to see them stick to regional teams like Missouri, Kansas and as a stretch Okalahoma. Not in favor of Maryland and Rutgers.

I'm really not happy about this. This is TV and $$ driven and that's all. I'm really disappointed that the Big 10 did this.

The geographic and logistic aspects have been TOTALLY ignored. Yes, it's all about the money. How ironic, Brenda Frese, former Gopher women's hoops coach, will be coming back to the Big-Ten if she remains with Maryland. Very interesting!! :-)

Missouri and Colorado blew it by not wanting to be part of the Big-10.

Will North Carolina also be joining the Big Ten? If so, Coach Kill and AD Norwood will look like geniuses.

Actually, Missouri very much wanted to be a part of the Big Ten. Even Jay Nixon, the govennor of Missouri, publicly shared his thoughts about it, making it very clear that he wanted the University of Missouri to be considered as a member. However, Nebraska was already being considered by the Big Ten, and the conference stated at the time that it had no immediate interest in being larger than having twelve as members. Worried that the Big Twelve was falling apart, and frustrated with the imbalance of revenue made by other members of the conference (namely Texas), Colorado made a deal to join the Pac 10. It was unfortunate that Missouri didn't join the Big Ten, because not only would it have been a good regional fit, it would have brought in the St. Louis and Kansas City markets for television. Having Maryland and Rutgers as members of the Big Ten extends its reach out east with Penn State, and attaches itself with the large New York and Washington D.C. broadcasting markets. That could be quite lucrative to the conference members when the next television contracts come up for discussion and bidding.

Too late now but would have rather seen Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Iowa State become the new Big Eight. Would have been a good football/wrestling conference and the Gophers could have stayed in the WCHA.
