About 700 trappers have licenses to pursue canis lupis. Their challenge is to be more clever than their quarry.

My dog stepped in a trap once. It wasn't pleasant. Your story tries to make excuses that the rest of us just don't understand. If your going to hunt, make the kill quickly. I suggest someone that traps needs to try the trap or snare out first and see how it feels.

This article could have been published 200 years ago. There is no mention of trading with the french or Grand Portages. Must be a mistake.

The article states, "Trapping is widely misunderstood, and probably always will be." So what's to "misunderstand"? Manly men utilizing their God-given Freedom to vilely and sadistically outwit animals. Really?

Trapping is an "activity" for sadistic cowards, pure and simple. In the not so distant future, trapping will be classified as a felony.

Truly disgusting. One of these idiots placed his/her snares on public land near Duluth, and snared an extremely valuable Search and Rescue dog that was out training. Thank god the handler was close by.

ATTENTION wolf hunters. If you are looking for a hot spot for wolves try the area around Whitefish Lake. I camp there often & see wolves or wolf sign every time I'm there. They have been right in the camp ground several times. They aren't afraid of people & I'd like to see them dead before they kill my dog.

I agree with one statement in this article: "Yet all agree the woodsmanship and animal knowledge necessary to be a successful trapper is a skill set worth preserving, no matter how urban-centered the state becomes." The skill set is worth preserving. It is the same skill set that wildlife photographers employ to obtain images of animals in their habitats. Photographers work hard for their pictures. They don't set cameras in the woods only to visit them once a day. They don't cut down trees on public property in order to get their trophies, nor do they put hikers, skiers, snowshoers and their companion animals at risk in order to pursue their "pastime (or income cases, occupation)." Trapping is barbaric, plain and simple - not just to the "uninitiated" but to all who possess any degree of empathy for living things.

If you want to know how it feels: Put your leg in a cold steel trap and sit there in pain for 24-hours waiting for some guy to walk up to you and beat you with a club until you are dead. If you are really lucky the guy will walk up to you and shoot you between the eyes with a .22cal gun instead of clubbing you.

some of the commenters missed the editorial about the unstable emotional mindset of the anti wolf hunt crowd, to "thin the herd" so to speak for the scientific well being of the states over abundance of wolves, now its even stated trapping will be classified as a felony in the near future, now thats a little emotional
