Don't reroute freight trains, St. Louis Park residents plead

More than 300 people packed City Hall in St. Louis Park, most hoping to convince officials that a plan to move train traffic is a "lose-lose" for the city.

Former SLP'er here, grew up not far off the tracks in question. Lots of homes on that line have 2 trains a day and its been that way for years. Makes the house shake but also a bit quaint. You have to live there to know what that means. Increasing the traffic will simply be awful. How about re routing way west and make it the problem of some other suburb... like Hopkins?

Interesting article, but it raises questions: What is the railroad? Does it have any comment? What is the speed limit of the rail line? What time of day/night would these trains run through, and are there grade crossings that would necessitate train horns?

SLP agreed to this whole plan over a decade ago when MnDOT had to sever TC&W's former MILW line at Hiawatha Ave and 29th (what is now the greenway)... the current HCRRA Kenilworth connection was temporary until a permanent connection could be built near the junction where the TC&W line goes under the old MN&S Dan Patch (now CP) line. If I recall correctly, there was a superfund site on this ROW that needed to be cleaned up first.

Mark Dayton, Keith Ellison, Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar back the SLP route. We need to respect their positions and support this option.

"Lots of homes on that line have 2 trains a day and its been that way for years." Oh, the humanity!!! TWO trains!!!! Many small towns have (or HAD when the economy was good) 20+ trans a day. You get used to it, it becomes part of the background.

I became a 1st time homeowner 9 years ago. For the first time in my life, I do not live near train tracks. Maybe it's all in what you are used to, but I really miss that sound. It was always a familar sound, and it was somehow calming.

The trains that would be rerouted currently run right behind my apartment building. They are not a bother to me at all. I actually find the sound quite relaxing, and I like to take pictures of the trains in the summer.

If you think that is the case, you missed the part of the article that talked about trains no longer going past "the affluent Kenwood area." You lose, they win.

The proposal is to take a major freight train route from a rail corridor through a small winding rail track into a residentual neighborhood including St. Louis Park High School. Anyone seeing the comparison of the tracks would say the proposal does not make sense. The proposal is ridiculous and dangerous. The motivation for the change from a designated rail corridor to a neighborhoold spur line is reflective of new normal cynical political behavior. Office holders are now beholden to political benefactors at the expense of the safety and security of neigborhoods. This proposal defies logic on its face. We need help in our St. Louis Park neighborhood. We have probably not contributed enough to the Hennepin County Commissioners' political campaigns. The commissioners have probably already sold their souls. May God have mercy on them when our children die as the result of their mismanagement. The fault is probably with us for not paying more attention to what was going on. Instead of trusting elected officials and working at our jobs, we should have been more politically involved. In fairness to the elected officials, getting elected is expensive. The elected officials need to listen to the big money contributors. In this case the big money is in Kenwood where the rail coridor is located now. Frankly, the big money could probably move the freight rail anywhere they liked regardless of the safety,security, or ecomomic impact. All of the above is just Political Science 101. The person with the gold makes the rules.
