There is nothing wrong with wanting to be able to gps your kids. Many phones have that option now. Give them benefit of the doubt and let them know but there is nothing deceitful with this. Deceitful would be reading a diary. If kid does disappear or not show up at home, yes it can be used to throw someone off but it can also be used to save a person.
When it comes to the holidays there are a few tricks I like to use. My first one is, on the years that I will be expecting a lot of extended family/guests etc I do Christmas on the 24th with them. Throw a little get together etc and then save Christmas day for my daughter and fiance. It has taken away from the stress etc. Also, if you have family that brings gifts, do the exchange after eating etc and limit the immediate family to one gift saving the rest for Christmas. Never have had a complaint and it seems to work out much nicer.
