For Tubby Smith, recruiting is 'the lifeblood of a program'

Few elite recruits have chosen the Gophers under Tubby Smith. Attracting an upcoming regional star or two would enhance that reputation.

If only Tubby had hired a top recruiter, maybe a Jimmy Williams... oh, wait -- he did, and Maturi vetoed it, putting an anchor on the recruiting program that it is still trying to get out from under - kids don't think much beyond the news and what the coaching icons tell them, and opposing coaches bring things like that BS up to the local kids to imply that the coach here does not run the program...

I like Tubby, but I feel like he is just going through the motions right now and is not doing a very good job of recruiting. He needs someone on his staff that can recruit well. Also, as far as ranked players coming out of high school-if Ralph Sampson III was a top 100 recruit, maybe the recruiting services are not always real accurate.

"Minnesota isn't really on the radar of four and five-star recruits," said Jeff Borzello of "The reputation of their assistants, and even Tubby [is] they're not really ace recruiters." Sounds like a guy coasting into retirement. We could have had Tim Miles for less than half the price. Better recruiter, better game coach and half the age. We better enjoy this year, looks like it's going to be a while again after this.

If these coaches could take the recruits to a warm climate they could recruit better. Sounds like these coaches just give up and recruit second and third tier players. Also, in college sports, there is no draft so success breeds success. To date, Smith and his staff can't get off the bubble.

Tubby may be looked at by many as a man you cannot trust as the Jimmy Williams trial showed; perhaps recruits and their advisors just do not trust Tubby Smith?

This is hilarious. His lazy, lackluster recruiting was one of the main things that caused the fans in Kentucky to put For Sale signs on his lawn and he had every recruiting advantage imaginable at Kentucky.

Recruiting is the life blood you say. Well for a team that has been on life support for his entire tenure, he's not doing much to help get the program on its feet. He hasn't closed to border to Sconi let alone Duke, Mich St, et al. Point guard has been a serious issue for years. He still hasn't recruited one. Looks like someone at the Star Tribune is buttering up to Tubby. For what reason, who knows.

This is our chance to have a team like the Fab Five of Michigan. A team made up of local stars that could win a national championship. The barn would be rocking!

It would be nice to see a lot of locals playing together at the barn. I do think if the Gophs stay healthy (see T-Wolves) they could make a deep run in the NCAA's. That would REALLY help recruiting more then anything else.

Hw long do you think Jones would stay here??? 1 yr. max. Thats not how to build a pgm.
