Visit some of the "top" academically performing schools in Minnesota and one will expectations that the purpose of school is education and their are guidelines that parents, teachers and administrators have agreed upon with respect to acceptable student attire.

A previous post mentioned how having multiple uniforms is expensive. The opposite is true. Having 2-3 uniforms, that are usually not "designer label" removes the desire to dress differently every day, or having to buy many many outfits just to wear for school. Uniforms would be such a great idea. Just ask most of the countries that are doing well.

How embarrassing for the parents that they need to remind their daughters to be a little modest.

Those of you that are saying a female "deserves" comments from men for wearing tight fitting pants (that are infinitely more comfortable than denim) are perpetuating Rape culture. Women wearing burka's are sexually assaulted just as much as "Britney Spears clones" In saying that, you are essentially saying that men are innately incapable of keeping their inappropriate, unwelcome thoughts/comments/advances to themselves UNLESS a woman is wearing a turtleneck. I'm not advocating for teenagers to dress provocatively at school, and think requesting that parents speak to their children instead of outright banning leggings is a reasonable approach. But at the end of the day, teenagers will by sexually distracting each other no matter what kind of dress code you enforce.

We are in the Minnetonka district and we have had similar conversations at our house about what is and isn't appropriate to wear to school. Mr. Adney's message reinforced what we are trying to teach our children. So we appreciate the fact he sent the note and applaue him for taking time to do so. We all must work together to create a school that we can be proud of. Thank you Mr. Adney!!

Double standard. Check out a girls high school volley ball game with the skin tight shorts. Why don't the High Schools go to basket ball style uniforms if they're so worried about too much showing.

I've always said uniforms would be a great idea. Even when I was in highschool myself it seemed ridiculous how much thought everyone was putting into what they wore (including me). Kids want to fit in, so there is tremendous pressure to keep up with the latest styles. Uniforms would help mitigate that. It would also help the less well to do students who can't afford the latest styles have more self esteem and focus on learning (and that is what school is about - learning) - they'll learn the difficult lessons that life isn't fair and not everyone can afford to wear designer clothes somewhere else. Fewer distractions. Kids can focus more on learning and developing interpersonal skills rather than entrenching narcissistic tendencies for life.

Anybody remember flirt skirts? When I was in high school back in the last century, I was on student council and senior year the girls came back to school in September wearing the new fashion, flirt skirts. Well, we on the student council passed a resolution that fall banning the flirt skirts for being inappropriate in a school setting. But good lord, 2012 Spandex makes flirt skirts looks like a nun's habit. And the wheels go 'round....

Students are in school to learn, not flash skin. I agree with previous commentators, uniforms are the way to go.

Uniforms would make it easier to blame the school officials :) I am not a big fan of spandex but what is the difference between that and skin tight jeans. I think they should give the school officials something to chill out with.
