Rather than quash the expressiveness of appropriately dressed students with the draconian uniform suggestions, why don't we do what this very common-sense principal suggests: talk to your children about appropriate clothing. I'd even take it a step further — after that talk, make it clear that you expect them to attend school in appropriate attire and if they fail to do so, lay out very clear consequences.

so dumb. way to prepare them for the "real world" by instituting rules on how women should and shouldn't dress.

I grew up in uniforms. I didn't love it at the time but appreciated the ease of it. In MY DAY, the public schools had dress codes though. In the 60's girls had to where dresses or skirts. No t-shirts for the boys. The list wasn't that long or that difficult to follow. It could be modified for today's standards. I was at Benilde-St. Margaret's a few years ago and there is no uniforms anymore. But they still had their own version of a uniform. They all ended dressing in the same in clothes from the same stores. The all looked comfortable and neatly dressed. It's not that hard for them. Mrs. Bud

All these people saying this is just "blaming the girls" and "squashing the rights of women", that is just silly. Public high schools have a RIGHT to establish a dress code. School is supposed to be about learning - not a fashion show. I absolutely love the idea of uniforms. It takes so many troublesome issues out of the equation. In the end, uniforms are much cheaper (for the person saying that is unfair against the poor - doubtful that is a problem in Minnetonka anyway!).

If kids want to wear their swim suits to school, we should allow that too? There's a time and place for certain attire, I think we can all agree on this. If the parents of these kids won't do it, I'm happy to hear someone else will!

I'll go back to what one of our youth leaders said in speaking to the middle school students.......girls, if you want the boys to treat you like a lady then dress appropriately.....boys, if you want the girls to treat you like a gentleman then dress appropriately. Very basic concepts, you are treated like you dress. Doesn't mean that you have to wear a dress or a suit to school, just dress appropriately.

The threat of uniforms, and a strict dress code is the solution to this problem. My suggestion is that the school board draft a dress code contract that is sent to all students and parents-- with the understanding that if the dress code is repeatedly broken in a given period of time--then uniforms will be mandatory for each guilty student. All the students shouldn't be punished because of the inappropriateness of a few.

Tell me there is no public school in Minnesota that allows boys to show their underwear / rear end by letting their pants sag? I KNOW teens rebel in various ways. But I also know many adults regret much of what they did. I cannot imagine all the tatoos won't be a subject of regret as well. Too much early sex. Too much obsession with the current generation that sex and looking good and narcissism is all that really matters for now. Find a balance!

Dave Adney was and is a class act, and once I remind top teacher of the year in Minnesota. He was my math teacher when I was in high along time ago and he was a man of principle and of being an educator. Anything that disturbed his classroom as a teacher he address whether male or female. And know I am a forty year old father of a 12 year old daughter and she has leggings, with one exception, you wear a long sweater or dress with them to be seen as a respectful young woman, not a sex symbol! I think that is the point tha he is making it is not a war on women!
