Twins must get better defense along with improved pitching

As the Twins begin the work to fix one of baseball's worst starting pitching staffs at this week's general managers meetings, it's worth looking at what they're doing to shore up their defense.

This team has one thing holding it back from becoming a good team. A cheap owner.

Winning requires talent upgrades in most areas on this team...that's obvious....if the Twins were serious about winning though they would've cleaned house with respect to its mgmt...this years prospects? NONE.

Ok, San Fran and Detroit got were successfull but their starting pitching was really, really good and their hitting was really good as well. If their defense was great they would have been even better. Yes, defense is the least of these components but take offense out of the equation. 2010 (94 wins) Twins with Baker, Liriano, Blackburn, Pavano and Slowey had Punto, Hardy and Hudson behind them and gave up 671 runs. Same basic staff but with Nishioka, Plouffe and Valencia behind them gave up 804 runs in 2011 (63 wins). It was a race this year in the Central only because of Detroit's poor defense. Even with how bad the Twins have been the last two years there were probably 60 games that turned either on great defense by the other team or bad defense from our team. I remember watching a close series against Tampa a couple years back and Tampa won two of the games solely because their outfielders got to balls no one would think they could get to and our guys couldn't get to balls anyone would think they should have. Its the least of the three components but it still has a profound effect on the outcomes of games.

They had the shortstop job filled for the next 5-7 years with Hardy..... but NOOOOO.....he was too slow and was hurt for a bit.....what a joke for an excuse....You DO NOT trade an All-Star Shortstop, I'm sorry...........

How about better coaching too? Lets not forget that.

The problem with the Twins is, when they have a choice, almost always sacrifice offense to put defense on the field. They never seem to have players who can hit and play above average defense. Also, Gardy and Ryan seem to favor the midget infielders who can play good defense but can't produce much offense.

I remember the first time I thought the Twins had really turned the corner back in the 80's was when I saw Greg Gagne play shortstop. They have to keep striving for that gold standard in the field or they will never get better.

Winter meetings....why do the Twins even attend? And Ryan...C'mon..he's just another Pohlad The Cheap yes man. Gardo and his blood brother Andy got the job cuz they came cheap. Gardy is nothing but a glorified third base coach posing as a manager. 2013?? Fogetaboutit!
