Thank you. One of the odd outcomes of this issue being politicized has been how much and how deeply I have had to think about "marriage" and "partnership" and how deeply it has convinced me that the amendment, and its supporters, view of marriage is one of nostalgia and not workable in the world as it is. And thank you for speaking truth to those who believe that they still hold power over others in the name of God.

From the article: "You are Americans.... You have the right to speak out according to your beliefs." True, Eric Stuberg, but in my opinion it should give any mired-in-misapprehensions-about-sex-and-gender anti-marriage-equality and/or anti-women's freedom of conscience advocate who listened to today's Bachmann/Graves debate on MPR pause to hear Rep. Bachmann say, "I stand by the position I've held for 40 years, which is the position of the Catholic Church."

Another narcissistic Liberal that believes that his miniscule lifespan is in any way indicative of humanity’s long term social development. Get over yourself Eric, history repeatedly cycles though periods of cynicism and moral privation. I’m quite sure that long after your “dust” has returned to the earth…the Church will still be standing tall.

I think very soon we are going to see governments in the form of the U.N. turn on all religion!

I am sorry that I read this, it was just an angry rant. How did it get published? Attacking, near threatening, the other side does not move any issue forward.

I know this may sound crazy or just plain blasphemous, but I think a growing percentage of religion is guilty of worshiping a false God. I mean, they are so far off the intent of the Bible, and led astray so far by their current religious leadership, that they truly are worshiping the “False God” of current religion.

Separation of Church & State. The Catholic Church has the Sacrament of Matrimony. Matrimony and Marriage are not the same. One is a Sacrament intended for Catholics/Christians. The other is a description of 2 people joining together legally. The Church cannot and should not force non believers into a law. The Church can ban it for their members but they have no right to ban it for other believers. I am a Catholic but I am not one that believes that the Bible is God's Word. It is a History Book because the writers knew that if we do not learn from history, we will be bound to repeat it. It is a GREAT Learning tool to discover others and ourselves.

ljfrommin - Another narcissistic Liberal that believes that his miniscule lifespan is in any way indicative of humanity’s long term social development. --------------- Humanities "long term social development" has already won that argument. Wasn't that long ago that the church believed that the world was flat. Wasn't that long ago that the church claimed our planet was the center of the universe and everything revolved around it. The fact is, our long term social development will someday leave such arcane and out dated concepts as "church" and organized religion in the dust.

Well written and thank you Eric. I'm my years I've noticed the group of confirmed Catholics I grew up with has dwindled down their commitment by half. Who knows how many other generations it will take for the church, in America at least, to become irrelevant to the masses. For me personally, the take it or leave it approach to the marriage amendment by the catholic church, combined with the excessive spending of funds that could do so much for the greater good of others, has me thinking about where I will find myself worshiping, if at all.

I quit church!
