Thank you, Vermillion Township Board for protecting your people and animals! I will forever be perplexed how some people believe it's entertaining to terrorize cattle (or any animal, for that matter).

It makes me sad to think that some people find entertainment in animals being treated poorly. I think that most people would find it unacceptable if dogs were treated like that, but treating other animals poorly is not only acceptable, but entertaining.

Rodeos are bad enough but the cow thing is stupid and cruel. Fix the corrals and gates. Whatever needs to be done so it's safe for animals and bystanders. The legal issues would be horrendous if people would be hurt. Keep the noise down. Then reapply. Follow everything you need to for a safe event that doesn't disturb the neighbors and there shouldn't be a problem.

Cruelty is cruelty and some traditions shouldn't be continued. I applaud the Vermillion Township Board and their decision.

It seems ridiculous for the HSUS to want to stop cola in the state based on bad fencing. Cola or what the ignorant call steer tailing is no more dangerous to bovines then Bull Dogging and not as dangerous as Calf Roping. So if the HSUS wants to protect bovines they should as for a ban on all three. If they do not, then a law against cola, would appear to be discrimination. Of course, if they ask for a ban on all three, the law would be silly, since the dangers to the animals used is minimal. Vary few animals are seriously injured in Rodeo or Charreada. If you really want to protect something, outlaw high school football, when 50,00 children as hospitalized each year and between five and ten, die

Kudos to the Board for doing the right thing, but not for the best of reasons. The REAL issue here is ANIMAL CRUELTY. Steer tailing (aka "coleadero" or "colas") is one of the nine standard scored events of the "charreada," the Mexican-style rodeo, and Mexico's national sport. Two other abusive events ("manganas" and "piales") involve the roping of running horses by the legs. "Horse tripping" has been banned in nine states--California was the first. We need a federal ban of these cruelties. I have video footage of steers having their tails broken, even ripped off in the steer tailing event. And of horses suffering broken legs when the steers run the wrong way. The charros (cowboys) get hurt, too, but at least they have a choice in the matter. I'm all for cultural diversity, but NOT when animals are being abused in the name of "tradition." Even Cesar Chavez, founder of the United Farm Workers, opposed these abuses. I worked on a case in Denver three years ago in which seven steers suffered broken tails, and two others had a broken leg and broken pelvis, respectively. Some "sport"! Steer tailing (aka "coleadero" or "colas") is not a standard ranching practice anywhere in the U.S., nor is it sanctioned by any American-style rodeo association (which has its own share of problems). Steer tailing was banned in two California counties in 1993 (Alameda & Contra Costa). I was the sponsor of both ordinances. The State of Nebraska banned both horse tripping ("manganas" and "piales") and steer tailing in 2009. The entire nation should follow suit. Just for the record, commenter Randy Janssen (above) is a charreada promoter, horse tripper and lawyer (!) from San Antonio, Texas. For a fascinating look into a bizarre mindset, see his website, www.legalizehorsetripping.com (I'm not making this up.) WRITE YOUR STATE LEGISLATORS AND DEMAND A BAN ON THIS BRUTALITY. x Eric Mills, coordinator ACTION FOR ANIMALS Oakland, CA email - afa@mcn.org
