From all the pink (one garbage hauler was even distributing pink garbage bins), one would think this is the only disease from which women suffer. More women suffer and die from heart ailments than breast cancer. But one wouldn't know it from the Komen group's marketing blitzkrieg. How many of you have bothered to look at how much of the funds actually go towards cancer research? Or how much their executives are paid?
Thank you for this article. Even for those of us who have not had a recurrence, we always have a fear in the back of our minds that it could occur. That is the challenge of "survivorship." We are all grateful that our country is recognizing the prevalence of breast cancer and the need for a cure with a pink ribbon. At the same time, for some of us, the ribbon is a constant reminder of the emotional and physical pain that we have endured after our diagnoses. The side effects of treatment are also a problem that often are only discussed among survivors. While we are grateful that they have identified treatments that can save our lives, the harsh reality is that we are affected daily by the many and severe side effects that the surgery, chemotherapy and ongoing medication (tamoxifen) have brought to our lives. Thank you for your support of the survivors, no matter what stage we are in our cancer journey!
Those of us diagnosed or a survivor of a different type of cancer knows what breast cancer survivors go through, but wonder why so much attention is given to one type of cancer. Why not prostate cancer, which impacts so many men? Why not blood cancers/Leukemia, the most common childhood cancer? The good news is that many types of cancers are making progress in the fight for that type of cancer, even if we only hear about the successes of one type of cancer.
