The story headline says the boat will be christened Saturday, tomorrow. But this sentence in the story: "It is expected to officially become part of the Navy fleet when it is commissioned next summer." Says next summer. Which is it? I wonder if the bow of the boat really has that art on it. I hope so.

Actually, the hull is coated in thick rubber for sound deadening and it's hard to weld a steel plate to rubber. Or so I have been told

tkelley11 - Christening and entering active service are two different things. Boats/ships are normally christened when they are complete enough to get wet. They/it will still require subsystem outfitting, sea trials, full crew selection etc. The bow art is just for show, and the ceremony. I wouldn't be surprised if it was done in water soluble paint.

Ships with a Minnesota connection? How about the WW2 light cruiser USS St Paul. It's anchor is on Harriet Island. My dad was on it's maiden cruise at the end of WW2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Saint_Paul_(CA-73)
