Archbishop Nienstedt is ripping apart the entire catholic community. I sure hope that after the state votes down this needless amendment he has the decency to resign his post.

If you don't like the churches teachings, leave, that's what Henry VIII did. Start your own church too.

Thank you for such a powerful article. I was raised by my Grandmother who was the cook for the priests at St. Mark’s parish in St. Paul. We lived across the street and I was an altar boy at mass every Sunday and had the keys to the church and locked it on the weekends. The church was a central part of my identity and I almost joined the seminary many times. Thank God for the Catholic Benedictine nuns at St. Scholastica where I attended college who helped me understand that being true to my authentic identity as a gay man was God’s plan for me. With their help, I was able to find myself, fall in love with my husband, and adopt and raise a child. The oppression of the church towards gays and lesbians has been really painful for me but what really hurt was the realization that I will never be able to raise my daughter in the Catholic faith because I don’t want her to be raised in a faith community that doesn’t recognize the dignity of her family. I hope Catholic leadership reads Matthew 23:13 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to."

"the Catholic position is not ... meant to be mean-spirited or bigoted" == And people who opposed inter-racial marriage or intergrating the schools did not mean to be mean-spirited or bigoted, but they were. And the church is.

The Catholic Church, lead by people like Archbishop John Nienstedt are not in my view leading with Christ's example of compassion and love, but instead are focusing on hate and differences. A church is an institution, not God or Religion in itself. Leave a church that becomes disconnected from your God.

I was born & raised in the Catholic faith. However, I left that faith, some years ago, when I could no longer tolerate the prejudices the Catholic Church appeared to hold against women, Catholics who had suffered thru a divorce, babies who had died before they were baptised....and the list goes on & on. I believe that God is a loving Father/Mother.....One who loves all of us. I can understand why these parents feel alienated by the Catholic Church.

RE: bill9844 "If you don't like the churches teachings, leave..." ----------------------- That is exactly what many of us are doing. Soon, the Catholic Archdiocese in this area will represent only aging zealots.

The Catholic church has zero moral authority after the years it spent covering up child abuse and paying out millions of dollars to shut people up. I hope I live long enough to see the tax exempt status pulled from churches.

Heart breaking story. Even more heart breaking to know this has happened to many, many families. May those who have been hurt by the church in this way know how deeply they loved by God.

As Catholics we were taught that "We are the church." Church is not the building or the hierarchy. Some of the faithful still gather together and celebrate the tradition that sustains us as we walk in justice and follow Jesus' footsteps. In the finest tradition of Catholic faith, following my conscience (ignoring the Archbishop), because of my faith and not in spite of it, I am standing on the side of love, and voting NO in NOvember.
