Job seekers should also check out startwire.com, which has a lot of useful features. With careful management you can get excellent job search results, and avoid SPAM. But plan on getting numerous emails to sell insurance, as there seems to be no way to avoid those. Smart job seekers use a Google Voice phone number to screen calls, and a Google email account to avoid having your regular email account Spammed, and you can delete it when you find employment.

Social media should be a small part of an overall job search strategy. It is the modern equivalent of faxing your resume. Nothing beats networking in person at every opportunity.

I would also recommend using the key local business journals (StarTribune, The Business Journal, Twin Cities Business). Get email alerts to find out who's growing (hiring) then network into those companies before they start posting jobs. Speaking of posting jobs, use the job boards (StarTribune Jobs, Monster, etc.)- real jobs by real local companies are being posted every day and those companies want to fill them quickly with qualified candidates!

It is also important to know the key words for your current & previous work experience as well as having your skills listed correctly to optimize your profile search. With the new endorsement section it is obvious LinkedIn is developing their search in this area. As a LinkedIn trainer, I teach people to optimize their profile for the results they want and I feel LinkedIn is the best tool to accomplish this.
