Bryna DelCastillo is the fastest runner on the Coon Rapids cross-country team, but can't compete with them because Anoka-Hennepin district policy prohibits it.

The thing that struck me most in the story was that the board met in closed session to discuss the issue. On what grounds did they go into closed session. The state's open meeting law has very specific exceptions and I cannot think of how this issue falls under one of those exceptions. Can the writer check this out?

I see either the reporter or the editor has addressed the issue of the closed session by removing the reference to it in the story. Does that mean there was no closed session, or that you just took the reference out of the story.

Boards go into closed session to discuss individual student issues or discussions that may involve protected private data. For example, details of a divorce, peior academic or behavioral concerns, house address, etc.

exactly.. But a discussion on changing a policy on student participation in activities, as this article orginally stated, doesn't fall under any of these exceptions. And if they went to closed session due to a threat of a lawsuit, which is allowed, that wouldn't stand either because the courts have said a lawsuit must have either been filed or be imminent.

Getting out of the A-H school district was the best decision my family ever made. Note to families moving to or who may someday move to or within the Twin Cites: Stay away from the Anoka-Hennepin school district.

As anyone who has been a runner, many, many times the best female runners are the 7-8th graders. That in itself should matter in these cases. Obviously, many girls' bodies go through changes as they age, changes that have a negative impact on their running ability.

What a great learning opportunity this is for all of the girls on the Coon Rapids CC team. I hope their parents and coaches spend some time and discuss this situation with them. They can see and experience on a first-hand basis the results of an over-powered cabal of government bureaucrats.
