Scoggins: QB the glamour position? Not so Sunday

Both QBs struggled mightily as Skelton hit a cheerleader and Ponder couldn't hit anybody.

The offensive line is not as bad as Ponder makes them look. If he would begin stepping up instead of stepping out of the pocket, he'd be a lot easier to protect.

Ponder simply isn't a franchise QB, maybe not even a true NFL starter. Ponder-Aholics need to stop thinking, he will magically develop into something special! You too Frazier. We have the best RB in the NFL, Best overall offensive player and a very capable deep threat. Ponder has more weapons than 70% of the league and he still struggles. He can't even complete 20 yard passes! We have WR's open down field, so don't tell me Ponder has nobody to throw too. It's not true. Sick of excuse for Ponder. I hated this pick from Day 1. At the draft-scouts said he wasn't a game changer, couldn't throw well downfield and simply didn't have a strong arm. This isn't a QB, you call the future of your franchise. 1st Round Brains, with a 5th round arm. That's Ponder.

""I've got to do a better job of getting rid of it quicker and getting it out of my hands," he said..........but not into the defenders hand !!! I had high hopes for Ponder but I have to believe even the Vikings brass are somewhat disappointed in his (lack of)progress at this stage. I don't think we can ever count on Ponder being better than average and really not a QB that you can expect to go out and win the game for you like a Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Mannings etc.

Ponder was a reach as the 12th pick and Vikes need a backup plan if his costly mistakes continue. What's troubling is the turnovers are carbon copies of earlier ones this season & last. He looks like a career backup not a franchise QB. Ponder has thrown short, easy high percentage passes all year & when he tries to go downfield his accuracy and arm strength are lacking. The wins may mask the 3 mistake filled games in a row but get Webb ready!

Ponder had 352 yards passing last week, maybe he'll have that many Thursday night. Can't bench your quarterback when you're winning. I think a more probable thing is he'll get dinged up and we'll see what Webb can do then.

Siouxchamp is right, Vikes have two of the most explosive playmakers in the league and still have no passing game. That's hard to do! Ponder hasn't even played real competition this year and has mostly sucked. Wait till he has to get into shoot outs with the likes of GB twice and Houston. And, play a shut down D like Chicago twice. Vikes brass will be so disenchanted with him that they will make the QB spot an open competition at next summer's camp and Ponder will end up losing the job - to whomever! Let's face it, it's not like he even earned the job this preseason, it was handed to him.

I'd like to see Ponder "own" his poor play when he's in front of the mike acting as team spokesman -- and I'd like to see Frazier insist on Ponder's accountability. There's a difference between thinking you can "make that play" and making that play... With experience last season and seven games under his belt in his second year, Ponder's mechanics should be improving, not regressing. He makes rookie decisions under pressure, flees the pocket too often and his accuracy has been inconsistent. p.s.: the third-string kid warming the bench has a heckuva arm that shouldn't go unnoticed...

As hard core Vikes fan, I still can't tell which way Ponder is going to break. It really could go either way. He is hard on himself, which means he could either keep working positively, or, he will sulk and brood on his mistakes. He doesn't ever throw deep, which either means he is inaccurate on the deep ball or the scheme doesn't call for it or he doesn't have the WRs. (Simpson is hurt). He has happy feet but he is also not afraid to take a hit. He has made some clutch plays (he would have taken the Vikes back in the RG3 game), but he has also squirted some panic throws up for grabs. I just don't know. I just don't know.

I'll go along with Joe Webb now, as a wide receiver. He's got nothing else to do, can't be any worse than a few of the receivers that you never hear from, and the clipboard is not that heavy. Someone else can hold it for awhile. The guy is just too good to be standing on the sidelines.
