One half season in, one has to give the Vikings an "A" in the 2012 NFL draft when it comes to grading their first round picks. Left tackle Matt Kalil and safety Harrison Smith have been difference makers and have solidified two positions for what we hope is a long time to come.
1st safety to have a pick since 2007? didn't abdullah (sp?) have at least 1 last season?
Abdullah had 3 INTs in 2010 and one more last season.
Let's not forget the other big play of the game when Winfield didn't bite, covered his man, and when the QB tried to run for the first down, applied a tackle that anybody in the NFL would grimace when they looked at it.
I always noticed that the safeties played back further than any others in the NFL. Is/was that their idea? or was it the coaches idea? I suspect our corners couldn't cover one on one, meaning the safeties were one dimensional, deep pass protection. Apparently Smith isn't listening to them, or something has changed somewhere. Nice to see.
This guy is fun to watch. Seems to "flash" at least a few times a game. The secondary as a whole looks GREAT! (Of course that might be because last year's version was simply awful).
Even Sanford has looked pretty good.
Allen could have had 30 sacks last year if this group was playing behind him!
Smith's team and Notre Dame have a lot in common... They both rely on the refs to move the ball down the field and get points when they need them.
Thankfully he scored on the int return, because we all know our offense sure wasn't going to.
who's going to be the breath or blast of fresh air next week? getting pretty creative with these headlines...
I don't want to get too far ahead of myself because our schedule up to this point has been a "Jerry Kill Special", but it sure has been refreshing to watch a Viking team on the upswing after the marginal talent we've had to endure the last few years! If anything, the Vikings may be "jelling" a tad to quickly because another infusion of good, low-round draft picks could really take us from being "competitive" to being a "serious contender" in the NFL!
