Patrick Reusse: Do it your way, Coach Kill, but don't expect U fans to like it

A return to Masonesque success won't get the people here excited, but that's to be expected in a major market.

I like Kill. What's not to like?

He has a herculian task ahead of him. Who really wants to coach this sorry sorry program? 45 years since relevancy says it all. Good job Patrick, again.

Well said Patrick. Especially the part that going to low tear bowls just get's nautious. After 45 years we want alot more than that.

If the score tomorrow is 75-0 I think Kill is done. He has dug his own hole with this cowardly act, and now almost every bit of good will he had has been peed away.

Excellent analysis Mr. R. It's all about the money for a school that says it has none. And as Mr. Souhan said the other day, when did Mr. Kill become this coach that deserves to be followed without question? He must me a legend in his own mind, which is fine, but hasn't reached that level yet in this state. Not even close.

After the Brewster years, I think Mason's performance with the Gophers looks pretty darned good -- and certainly better than any of his immediate and not-so-immediate predecessors: Gutekunst, Holtz, Salem, Stoll. Going 8-4, 9-3, 10-2, and some fans weren't happy with that. Tell you what, it sure beat a 4-7 season, or 1-10, year after year. And Patrick, you never know about some of those smaller-town newspapers where Kill coached. Sometimes, a sports writer there can write a column carving up a coach just as effectively as can a metro columnist. Mike Royko once said that there may be some small-town newspaper guy writing the s*** out of all of us. Could be. Rule No. 1 -- don't jump to conclusions. Even small-paper writers know that. :)

Life in the nation of diminished expectations. And you know why...it's because we all want to be seen as successful, we all want to be liked and don't want the criticism. Heck, there's an article in the startrib today about lowering our learning standards so we can accomodate acceptance in our schools. No, our young athletes no longer want to pit ourselves against the greater challenges, we would rather just want to win....NOT! Do not take away the challenges of a young man wanting to measure himself against the best. Do not take away the opportunity to emotionally and physically prepare himself to be razor sharp. Rather, let's go to play Podunk U and deep inside say: We going to a bowl man! Personally, I'd rather see them measure up to the best. Believe? It's what's inside a man to find out what he is made of. Win or lose, give him that opportunity. It's not all about you coach.

Just proves the local sports media would rather have a coach who is friendly with them than a coach who wants to win. Football coaches are supposed to get fired up and angry. Jim Harbaugh might not be the nicest guy in the world, especially to the media, but he wins games. Also, the media is not the public. More members of the public hate the media than they do football coaches.

I like Kill. He ran good programs, one that beat the Gophers. So its pretty hard for me to hear Reusse act like Kill must realize he's hit the big time with this program. Just what Gophers team is Ruesse harkening back to? 1960 something?? In fact, Kills other teams had much more prosperity that the Gophers. Gophers have been at the bottom of Division ! for a long, long time. Secondly, the AD gives final approval on cancelling North Carolina. Reusse completely ingnored that fact. Then he compliments him on starting Nelson?? Weird, strange article.

Reusse, you are correct in that every MN coach seems to put colleges for nuns on their preseason schedule to hype the program with wins. The problem today, is that there are some fans who still buy into this. You have been ripped for your thinking and I was too, a few weeks ago, when I made the comment with the message to "wait until we start to play Big Ten teams." As most have predicted, we have one more chance to win, Illinois, but that is it. Sorry, but Minnesota needs to find a coach, who is probably going to be from Minnesota, that can recruit in Minnesota to keep our best players here and add to them some junior college transfers, and finish with some talent from around the country. Otherwise, it will continue with something close to a four and something record, and if we eke out a win or two more, maybe a trip to some bowl game in East Tulsa.
