I think Leo's expression in that photo sums it up pretty well.

"Gary Bettman said were simply variations of earlier offers..." / Aren't the ALL variations after awhile? Fehr is just as responsible/bad for this as Bettman.

Wow. After reading Parise's comments, my heart goes out to him and I almost cried. I can't believe the owners are asking him (and countless others) to live on less than $98 million dollars over the next 13 years! That's an abomination! Gee, when I got hired at my job I got a $1.00 raise after 90 days. Parise got a $10M signing bonus that I have to imagine softens the blow of not receiving a paycheck for awhile. Poor baby!

aarons612Oct. 19, 12 7:42 AM

strib1991: you're missing the point. Parise's saying that the oweners signed these huge contracts know full well that they had no intention of actually following through with them. That's wrong.

nsjohn130Oct. 19, 12 8:20 AM

Know what else is wrong aarons? The NHLPA not wanting to play ball. They have done almost ZERO negotiations. We all know where this will lead...to a 50/50 split. But we may lose the season in the process due to the players wanting to start a war.

Louier107Oct. 19, 12 8:50 AM

I agree with what the point the players are making but by not playing they are never going to ever see that money again. This is not MLB or the NFL. The NHL is not that big and if the owners want to run it this way let them. Whether they like it or not the owners hold the keys to this and they know it! Its (money) is lost forever as is the jobs of everyone associated with the NHL (ushers, bartenders, restaurants, hotels) are all suffering as a result of this. Thank you owners and players!

bmgarvertOct. 19, 12 9:47 AM

john, how is the NHLPA not playing ball? They submitted 3 counter proposals and two of them reached 50/50, just not starting on day 1. I think the "described" proposal is a good one, it gets the HHR to 50/50 on day 1 and allows the players to complete the contracts they signed prior to the CBA ending. Yes, it is tough to feel players like Parise, but he has a very valid point. The fact that Leipold handed out two $100 million contracts two months before negotiations and now does not want to honor them is jacked up.

wildfan1981Oct. 19, 12 9:56 AM

Leipold (and other owners) signed contracts knowing the CBA was ending and expecting to reduce players' share significantly lower than 57%. What should owners have done, not signed any contracts until after a new CBA was agreed to? (yeah, right). Players can argue all they want about contracts not being honored, and they have a point. However, asking for 50/50 share PLUS honoring all contracts is NOT a 50/50 share -- it's more like 55/45. If they want all existing contracts honored, then they need to accept 45% share of HRR in Year 1 to get to a true 50/50. The share could increase to 50% in future years as existing contracts are flushed out of the system.

nsjohn130Oct. 19, 1211:16 AM

bmgarvert, you fail to realize that a 50/50 split + honoring contracts IS NOT A 50/50 SPLIT. Fehr even admitted DURING THE PRESSER that they did not run the numbers on the 3rd 'proposal'. Get it?

Anytime Donald Fehr is part of a negotiation between players of any sport and the owners of any sport it is bad news! He always takes a hard line same as when he represented the MLB players from 1986-2009 he is all about making more for himself and cares nothing about the sport or the fans. In this economic climate the players should realize that they are blessed beyond belief with the amounts they make regardless of how talented they are my patience is wearing thin with these guys when I have to struggle just to be able to pay for food and shelter, they just do not realize how good they have it!!!
