Souhan: Tubby and Kill power coaches? Deference isn't deserved

The university allows both to operate as power coaches, even though neither has won enough at Minnesota to justify that deference.

Oh so very true. But there is one big difference. Tubby does have talent on his teams. Kill has finished near the bottom in recruiting and near the bottom of the standings. There is NOTHING that even remotely suggests Kill is turning this program around. I hope they have a quick hook on Kill.

Great article! It drives me nuts that coaches who make so much money because of fan involvement feel it's beneath them to answer simple questions from the media. I'm disappointed in Kill, because when we hired him he seemed like such a straight shooter, and now he's ducking average BCS teams and blaming the weather for his team's turnovers (even though their opponent had none). Don't think changing coaches every two years is the answer, but hopefully he'll demand a little more from his team and himself. Tubby? He's only a legend in his own mind. And that's a much easier sport for a MN coach to succeed in, especially with the talent base in the Twin Cities.

Ya. You're right. We should hire proven winners such as Tim Brewster and Dan Monson. Do you really think John Calipari and Nick Saban types are coming to coach at the U? Tubby has had his issues, but you think it's ok to evaluate Kill now. Knock his recruiting all you want. He got the top 5 recruits in the state to go here.

Our new Norwood is on the hook for Coach Tubby, because he just signed him to an extension. badger joel macturi and prexy k are on the hook for Coach Kill. prexy k is on the hook for our new Norwood. The number of Big Ten wins vs. Big Ten losses will always be the determining factor. BUT: are you going after the vikings coach for the their horrible play last season? Certainly enough viking players have disgraced that sad, sick viking organization. The twins have certainly been pretty disasterous. Why not go after that shakey organization the way you go after the U of M? The t-pukers have been HORRIBLE for SO long. And how bad is that NHL franchise...the wild? Give them NO free passes. And, why not go after Pam Borton and the way she has run the Women's oops Program into the ground? Come on, there are LOTS of coaches around the Twin Cities who have been given that power-trip for free and none of them have won diddly-squat. Now, the power-trippers from the Twin Cities on the radio and in the newspapers who write the columns...now THAT would be an interesting topic. HOW MANY YEARS will Sid...Reusse...Charlie Walters...Rosen...Tom Powers...Sansevere...Barrerio (sp? who cares?)... Sid's kid Chad...Schmidt...and that SOUHAN...just how long will THEY be tripping and ripping and picking on all those better paid power trippers at the U and in the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL? Heck...EVERYBODY's on a power trip: Bloggers, Sports chat sites...people who write in to the blogs...why...even EYEINTHESKY likes to rip those other people who so often are on a power trip... But, seriously, Souhan, why is it that you guys rip on the power trippers over at the U of M so much more often than those power trippers with the vikings, twins, t-pukers and wild? It would be a REAL trip if you would give me an answer... ; 0 )

Gopher football has been DOA each fall for 50 years. Won't change. The basketball program should get a lifetime achievement award from the NIT: The Gophs always seem to make it there, and always go home without a trophy, so the LAA would be something.

So I think we should hire the news writer to go recruit a big name coach to come to U of M to coach and see how many top players he can get to come here without cheating. It is not easy and is the U of M willing to pay REALLY BIG MONEY for a BIG coach? Bet not...Until you can round up the money... butt out

The basketball 'legend' won a championship with another coaches players, as soon as he had his own recruits, it was one and done in the tournament.

The key point in this article was the point about the AD. In order for university programs not to get seduced by the "power coaches" they need a strong AD. And unfortunately, it looks like Teague wants to prove he is a "football" guy and give Kill free reign. When all other programs are moving towards having more checks and balances around their power coaches/programs (especially after the Penn State debacle) , Teague seems to be giving Kill everything he wants. Even when it costs the school 800,000. Nicely played.

That's it... "Wrongway" Souhan is calling for heads at the U. My instincts tell me the right call is to bet against Souhan. You watch...things are about to improve in the athletic department at the U.
