Reusse: NHL lockout leaves void for St. Paul businesses, too

  • Article by: PATRICK REUSSE , Star Tribune

The Wild should have opened its season Saturday, but with the NHL in a freeze, West 7th Street was relatively quiet -- Cossetta's aside.

Please owners and players, when you do settle don't insult us all by saying we are happy for the fans and wanted to come back for them also. We all know it's for your personal gain, which I don't have a problem with because a lot of companies and workers go on strike/lockout to try and improve themselves, but please don't give us the "happy for the fans" line.

Pretty solid poster Patrick, I think that the players having Mister Fehr "Donald Duck" could fry the whole season, wrong time in the history of the NHL to have Joe the super union guy representing your interests when the NHL clearly is stating we can't operate same old same old. Maybe the NHL should open up employment options by bringing in substitute players, would rather watch a bunch of ham and eggers on the ice compared to the lack of effort over the past 3 years

@misternoall...nice stab at the union...wrong direction though...Bettman is the problem...and owners who agreed and now want to back track...guess you're not a union guy..well without them where would we be?

lindy_frank123: Unions are unnecessary in today's work world and especially not in professional sports. This isn't third world China, we don't have sweat houses in the United States. The only thing unions do is over inflate labor costs and destroy incentive to work hard and get ahead. The laggards don't get fired for poor performance they get the same pay as those carrying the load!! No, definitely not a union guy and definitely confused over why a professional athlete needs union representation to get his six figure (or higher) income!!! Ridiculous!!!

Anyone stop and think that maybe this is the reason NOT to give millions in public money to sports teams for stadiums? There's just no way we can guarantee that things like this won't happen. And after putting a bunch of our eggs in this basket what will we do if some of these small businesses have to close which is likely if this goes on much longer. It's government's job to create the appropriate conditions for business to thrive, not to give handouts for one particular freeloading industry.
