The common coyote is tough to distinguish from its bigger relative.

Good grief. It is not hard to distinguish between a coyote and a wolf. It's like distinguishing the difference between a small dog and a malamute.

Like the hunters care what they shoot. As long as it's a critter.

"Matt Steffen of Osseo -- like most trappers -- respects coyotes, which seem every bit as smart and wily as wolves. "During deer season you're going to have a lot of rookies with wolf permits who have never seen a coyote or a wolf,'' Steffen said. ..."So, yes, they easily could mistake wolf pups and adult coyotes. "But I've seen lots of coyotes in my traps, and I'll know the difference between them and a wolf." Good. At least we'll have on guy out there who knows what he's doing...

"Take your pound of flesh, Shylock, but touch not one drop of blood or sinew..." Yup, you can even mount that "wolf" next the mule's head you have in the den which you keep calling a "deer"

Every hunting season their is one or two human 'accidents' were a person is shot because a hunter doesn't get a good visual on it's prey before pulling the trigger. Will a coyote be shot because a hunter overreacts with excitement of seeing the fur of an apparent wolf? Without a doubt.

If a hunter can't tell the difference, he shouldn't have a permit.

This issue is obviously emotional. Many of the comments are anti-hunting and not directly related to the "poor coyote" premise. What the article says, which is true is that it is already legal to shoot coyotes at any time. They have no protection. Which means two things. First, obviously existing coyote hunters are making the dinstinction as we are not getting reports of "poor wolves" being shot by mistake. Second, let's assume coyotes are shot and identified as wolves. That simply means less wolves are killed at the expense of their "lowly cousins" that have not required any protection to continue to flourish. It's hard to see this article as anything less than another thinly veiled attempt to prevent the hunting of wolves. Even when in this case the premise is less wolves might die.
