Amidst the humor and sarcasm .... solid points, all! And yeah, the Legacy Fund minders *also* need to get their heads outta the clouds and quit funding a lot of the absurd and petty crapola they do.

The 1% Orchestra Board thinks that the musicians should give nearly half of their salaries for a NEW LOBBY?????

There is a lot implied in this opinion piece that simply isn't true. I am no defender of the Minnesota Orchestra or its decision to renovate its lobby. However, I am a defender of intellectual honesty. First off, not one penny of Legacy dollars are being spent on the capital renovation. Zero. To imply so is entirely misleading, and spreads cynicism and mistrust towards a fund that has, for the most part, been a huge success in increasing arts access in our state. Second, rich people and corporations LOVE to be associated with physical buildings. A significant portion of the funds raised for the lobby are private, and would NOT have been given to fund general operating expenses. One can not assume that the $50 million being spent on the lobby could just as easily have been raised to pay musicians. Perhaps a sad reality, but a reality nonetheless. Finally, the public money that is being invested is state bonding dollars, which can ONLY be used for capital construction. The sum total the arts gets in bonding money would barely cover the taxpayers' burden for the urinals in Target Field, let along Xcel Energy, the new Vikings palace, etc. Suggesting both are equally bad uses of taxpayer dollars is like saying petty theft and murder are both equally immoral.

Hey did you see your picture on the Schniederman's Furniture commercial? When the husband opens up the paper. There you are right on the front page.

"Heck, tear down the rest of the hall and just build the new lobby. Have a DJ in the corner spinning old-school Deutsche Grammophon vinyl. You'll get a whole new audience, too." That really nails it. I think this management would be happier running a theme park or a hotel.

I love the snarky reference to devoting a large portion of the news to the orchestra. That always annoys me to no end that the end of the news is all about sports. Wouldn't it be amazing if the last third of the news was a recap of the arts community and arts events locally and nationally instead?
