The wolf was after the dog, not the man. Hunters and ranchers take chances when they graze cattle or hunt on land where wolves are. You have to expect wolves taking either. They can't go to the store and buy their food. Leave them alone. All they have is wildlife to eat. Stop taking what they need to eat and they'll probably leave your dogs and cattle/sheep alone. If you hunt on government land, my taxes pay for that and I say let them alone. I've heard some say there's not enough deer for them and wolves are starving. Let nature take it's course.

Seriously, Doug Smith? Hyperbole much? Ant-wolf bias much, Star Trib? Ridiculous headline: 1) hunter and DNR say the wolf likely didn't even see him; 2) DNR even says wolves avoid people; 3) rare, fluke chase encounter. And yet the headline suggests a man-eating, life threatening encounter. Pathetic.

I really don't know how to feel about this article. On one hand I'm upset he killed such an amazing creature and on the other I nearly killed a coyote for attcking my dog. When I was living in California I took my dog to a park and she was attacked by a coyote. I jumped on the coyote's back and strangled him till he passed out. When I came back to the park to check on the coyote, it was gone. I feel bad for stangling it but that was my baby he was after and I wasn't about to let her become breakfast.

You people are complete idiots lets put you in the woods with your dogs you raised and trained spend everyday with and watch it come flying through the woods with a wolf bearing right down at you and all you got is a shotgun full of bird shot tell me what you are going to do in that 3 seconds to react bang you shoot if you dont maybe it runs into you cause your an easier target then the much faster dog or it takes down your dog who you have been with throughout its lifetime obviously he feels bad he had to take the wolfs life but it happens so fast he didnt have much choice believe what you want but the evidence speaks for itself and all this is coming from a non hunter who loves wolves and dogs but realizes they are a WILD animal bearing down on you so what take your chances and see if the wolf decides to not kill your dog and you you say they both say its scared of him yea they typically are yet it was still coming straight at him what if it has rabies how is he supposed to know come one people use your heads here i mean my goodness

The headline is misleading in my opinion. The hunter, an admitted predator hunter/trapper says he really didn't want to kill the wolf. REALLY? Don't believe it for a second. You take a domestic dog(S) and turn it loose into wildlife area, you are taking a risk. I have no appreciation for dogs running loose in habitat where wildlife struggle to survive. All "hunting with hounds" should be banned, especially those used for big game hunting: running animals to exhaustion only to be torn apart by hounds. It is immoral.

The myopic anti-wolf hunting groups will probably now sue the guy. Yeah, we don't need to regulate the wolf population at all if one is chasing down a bird hunting dog 45 minutes from a guy's house; instead, we should explore putting up fences around grouse hunters or perhaps training guard dogs to protect everyone walking their lesser dogs in the woods. If as much energy was expened on actual conservation as opposed to this legal junk, our natural resources would be in much better shape.

Just realize this wolf was closer to the guy when he finally had to shoot than you would ever see at the MN Zoo. If the wolf was running towards him, that is about 1 second away.

I don't blame the wolf for being a wolf but I do question what has become of society when so many seem eager to put a wolfs' life over the safety of a human life and his dog.

Cowards need to stay out of wolf country. Why is the pet more valuable than the wolf? If people are so concerned about their pets, keep them home! Don't go into wolf territory and whine cause you see a wolf. People have to stop with the entitlement factor, you are not entitled to invade the home of wolves and then kill them. With that line of thinking then you have no right to protect yourself when someone invades your home.
