Today, extended warranty may be worth the money

Q I want your opinion on whether to buy an extended warranty on our 2012 Acura TSX. We just bought the car and the salesman told me, "If you plan to keep this car more than five years, you should buy the extended warranty." The cost to extend the coverage to 100,000 miles or 2020 is $1,950. He claims this car has so many computers in it there are bound to be problems sooner or later and computer problems in these cars are expensive to repair -- easily exceeding $1,000 a shot. What do you think? Is he just trying to sell me something I don't need, or should I splurge and pay the extra two grand?

It's probably too late for the TSX owner, but I would have bought the superior Hyundai Sonata for about $10K less and got their 10 year warranty included.

That Hyundai warranty is good but after the 5/60 is gone the 10/100 is just for power train coverage. It won't cover you if an electronic item like a sensor, computer chip or control module goes bad. Depending on where they are located on the car, sometime the labor can be significantly more than the actual part.

I bought a non-factory policy from one dealer and tried to use it at different local dealer. The dealer doing the repairs wouldn't accept the insurer's reimbursement rate per hour or the number of standard hours estimated. this left me in the middle of an argument. The dispute spanned two days and I ended up paying more than I expected. In the future, I buy only factory warranties to eliminate this hassle.
