The taliban is really just sunni islam. When wikileaks released US diplomatic cables, everyone could see what the US already knew: Saudi Arabia is still funding the taliban. So, the opression of women by the taliban should surprise no one.

Want to know how to stop this? Education. Religious extremism declines in an educated society and woman's rights increase in a educated society and the birth rate falls. Imagine if we spent 2 billion dollars building schools instead of smart bombs and predator drones. The world is changing slowly but educating the masses is what needs to happen in the middle east. 2 police officers raped a woman in Tunisia then charged her with indecency. In the past this would just be another day in Tunisia but now there is outrage and the President of Tunisia issued a state apology. Educating the middle east Especially the women would be our best weapon against fanatics and terrorists.

Dave Houg: "THIS is what we are fighting against in Afghanistan."

The reason we attacked Afghanistan is not because the Taliban was a violent, barbaric, viscious bunch of monsters, all of which they ARE. We went into Afghanistan because the Taliban refused to give up Bin Laden and other Al Quaida leaders. Or, at least, that was the reason given when we invaded. I don't believe we had any grave concerns about how women were treated by the Taliban or any other rulers, unless and until what is perceived as the National Interest came to the fore, at which time the U.S. was happy to use the plight of women as cover for true motives.

redgid, it is not just the saudis, wikileaks showed that the Pakistan military was also funding the taliban. Unfortunately, Pres Obama just authorized another $2 billion in economic and military aid for Pakistan. In effect, we are funding the same people that are killing our soldiers.

Now, that takes a real God fearing man to just walk right up to and shoot a 14-year old girl on the school bus. Wow,that really must rally make a real man like that feel oh so proud! Some of these real men simply cannot get out of the seventh century,no matter how hard they do not try.

markoakes, while I agree with your premise that education is the answer — what would be the point of spending $2 billion on building schools if the Taliban blows them up the week after dedication? What would be the point of building all those schools if little girls continue to be shot at coming home from those institutions of education?

As much as I would like it to be so, you can't stop this kind zealotry with books and school buildings.
