Smith shouldn't have shoved the ref but the ref also went a little overboard in separating Smith from the Titans player.

A suspension would be overkill...what he did may have been dumb but it wasn't malicious. A fine is appropriate, but suspension isn't warranted.

I get the impression that Smith is a pretty smart guy. Let's hope that in the future he can eliminate the undisciplined stuff.

I was at the game - at the time of the ejection, which was never announced (it was only reported as an unnecessary roughness call), many in the stands were ready for the replacement refs to come back and replace this crew. The vikes had 2 unnecessary roughness/unsportsmanlike conduct penalties at that point, both of which seemed pretty ticky/tacky.

Hauts81: The official may have been a bit too aggressive, regardless, players just have to keep their hands off officials. Big error by Smith. The only thing that might mitigate Smith's fine/suspension may be how the officials report the on field interaction. Smith has already had one fine, very possible the NFL could decide to send him, (Smith), a strong message. Hoping he is not suspended, but fear he may be. Harrison Smith is going to be an elite safety in the NFL, just has to maintain better judgement in some situations on the field. Really want him to remain edgy, and continue to make receivers pay when they catch the ball.

"The Vikings have lacked a safety who punishes receivers over the middle. Someone who is willing to swoop in and belt ball carriers. Someone who might actually make opponents take notice and give them something to think about as they study film that week." And the last one to do this was Joey Browner. Since then, the vikings have required all safeties to buy tickets because they are so close to the stands that when the camera pans, they aren't even in the picture. I don't know if that was a coaching decision or just poor safety decisions, but Smith is a refreshing change.

I was not at the game, but while watching on TV we clearly heard that the "player was ejected from the game" on the air from the officials. I think the ref announcing it even signaled the ejection while he spoke with a thumb indication as well? I suspect the crowd noise might have been too much for the fans to hear? Possibility? They never ever did show a GOOD replay of the incident though but from what Smith has owned up to, he was wrong. As for the other calls against the vikes and the titans, I thought they were all correct according to NFL rules. The only complaint I would have, and it was not an issue in this game, was how many "holding" calls were NOT called on the long titan touchdown drive.

Can you imagine how long it would have taken the replacement refs to figure out the onside kick off rules? One thing WAS nice about this. In all the years I have watched pro football and this situation comes up, I thought I knew it all. I didn't. It was REALLY nice to have an announcer in the TV booth who KNEW the rule, and informed everyone and he was 100% correct on this one.

The official crossed the line also.

Smith is a great addition, but he doesn't do the team any good when he's kicked out of the game.
