I would suggest the terror should be for those who are intending to commit crimes against those in their country, and that a feeling of reassurance should exist for those who are behaving, similar to what I feel when I have a policeman close by in a rough neighborhood. Not entirely safe, but the baddies are less likely to act up. The alternative is to drop out entirely (in many discussions it seems like the best thing to do) but be prepared to let women's and children's and minorities in religion and background resume their role of the ones that get killed or maimed in the name of some zealot's misinterpretation of his religious belief. If you saw the video of the woman being executed in the village square for adultery while the male went perfectly free, you'll see what will happen once we leave completely. While the author dreams of a perfect world, we know that reality is far different, much more brutal and terrible than just turning our blind eye. In that awful of an environment drones might let the innocent sleep better.

Collateral damage creates more enemies, and the assumption that these villagers are in complete control of their surroundings is bogus. Drones are a definite improvement over carpet bombing, but have to be used v e r r y carefully.

Does anyone see this War of Terror ending well? Talk about counter productive.

Who are these drones killing? Is it the Taliban or is it Al Quaida? Or is it some of each? I understand that Al Quaida has cells in European countries like Germany...and yet I hear no reports of drones being used there.If this is not one of the reasons Obama looks grim lately, it should be. Being responsible for the taking of innocent lives because he must be seen as tough on "terrorists" is something he'll have to live with the rest of his life. Nor can any citizen of the U.S. dispute their part in the responsiblity of taking innocent lives because they are scared of another 9/11.

Oh you mean like the terror that all Americans lived under waiting for OBL's next move? All in all, the drone program is effective, as long as we know who we're targeting and why.

goferfanz: You actually think Romney would be better in foreign policy? I'm not great fan of Obama's foreign policy, but at least he seems to make a favorable impression on people in foreign countries, as opposed to Romney, who can't keep himself from offending people, even those in a closely allied country like Britain.
