The original drug cartel, perhaps. While this discovery is new, I recall similar mass burials of human bones reported by National Geographic during the 1970's. They were discovered in ancient ruins, disturbed by grave robbers looking for gold and artifacts to be peddled -- not unlike Indiana Jones, only more pedestrian.

No, noggnbloggn, the drug customers had not yet arrived to the north, so no need for a cartel. And the biggest robbers of Aztec gold happened to be the the European colonists.
