Love interrupted: Rare disease threatens dogs

Jane Heinks' beloved hunting dog, Tandy, died of blastomycosis, a rare and sometimes fatal fungal disease that infects about 60 dogs yearly in Minnesota.

So, so sorry for your loss. Our little Dachshund Robby came down with another fungal disease, coccidioidomycosis, or "Valley Fever". He picked it up from the soil in Arizona. Luckily we were able to catch it in time and he survived.

I know of a dog in Crow Wing County that got a fungal disease like this. It probably picked it up near Pelican Brook or the Big Pine River. I never heard the final outcome.
