An anemic first half put the Gophers in a huge hole, with quarterback Max Shortell taking the blame for inaccurate throws.

Shortell reflects the inexperience and youthfulness of the Gopher team. I look for them to get better as the season progresses! I did not see a "team panick" such as has been the case in the last several years! I say play Shortell and reap the benefits in the next 2 years!

Sloppy routes were run again and again by a number of the receivers in the Iowa game - When sloppy routes are run, timing breaks down and passes look like they are a second slow. Sloppy routes means a defense can easily take away the receiver because they don't lose a step on a cut - also, any passes made have to be perfect because cheating on the routes lets the defenders get there with the ball. Watching the Gophers against Iowa, the QB timing was pretty good, but most of the routes were pretty sloppy and most of the receivers made little separation.. A couple of the receivers we have are very good in getting separation -- but most are soft on corners and thinking their way through routes... A QB needs 3-4 receivers and he needs to work them in their routes to have them do what HE needs. (FWIW - Favre said that - he worked with each one of his when he came here, and it took him 4-5 games before he was ready with them - and they were pro receivers.) Get separation by deception and come back to the ball when the zone collapses too soon, and the chains move.
