There was a time, say 80 or so years ago, when there truly was a rivalry between the US and Europe. US golfers were regarded as upstarts and there was less in the way of direct competition with the Europeans. But now, with virtually all the world's players competing with one another on a weekly basis both here and on foreign venues and with a lot of non-US players having homes here and using the same coaches as the US players, the idea of separating them for the purpose of having a competition based essentially on their primary residence seems to me to be contrived and outdated. While the quality of golf itself is certainly entertaining, as it should be with the world's best golfers playing, and I'm sure it's fun for those who are competing, as "theater" for TV viewers it's not as compelling as equivalent sports competitions, i.e. the Olympics, where competitors have a continuing identification with their sponsoring country.

I totally disagree with Rossberg. I think the Ryder Cup is as compelling as anything on TV. This will be a fun weekend!
