Budget cuts imperil final honors for veterans

The image of the military funeral is iconic: soldiers in crisp dress blues and polished shoes smartly folding the flag, a stiff volley from M14 rifles pointed to the sky, a solemn bugler playing the final tribute -- taps.

What a pathetic slap in the face. US Representatives and Senators have given themselves full retirement equal to their salary of around $144,000.00 per year, for life, after one term in office. Those that serve to protect all of our rights are dishonored.

This is politics at it's worst. Cut funerals first to shill for money.

This is obscene, however, there are still enough of of that perform these ceremonies at the VFW and American Legion to ensure families do not go without well deserved and earned honors. Just once I would like to see our elected officials cut their own benefits to balance the budget. What a day that would be!

Always money for war but not for healing the warriors when they come home and now not for burying them. Disgusting.

Let's cut pensions for all federal elected offices so that we can fund and maintain the honor for these brave men and women who have served their country.

This is a disgusting display by both sides. I'm sick and tired of every cut going to people that lived a honorable and productive life, but aren't millionaires or aren't on welfare. Military benefits should be the last thing on the list to get cut. There shouldn't be a single military benefit cut while able bodied people abuse social programs intended to be a short term safety net and mega corporations get tax refunds on billions in profits. Next on the list are programs WORKING people paid for like Medicare and Social Security. You want to give someone a voucher for healthcare? How about the guy that's rarely or never worked an honest day, and not the guy that just put in 40 years at the factory to see his pension and benefits disappear. I'm as liberal as they come, and I'm a huge believer in providing a safety net so people can get back on their feet and not crushing business with taxes, but it's getting ridiculous.

I don't see any comment or quotes from our members of Congress. Especially, Representative Kline, who likes to talk about how much he watches out for those in the military. You can bet that if any member of Congress who served in the military passes, there will somehow be money in the budget for their funeral.

This is appalling and disgusting. If there's money for war (and there always is, isn't there?), there should always be money for a military funeral for all veterans who want one. No exceptions.
