Not on to normally point this out, but what exactly is a "golf ourse"? Articles title at this time - "U's golf ourse gets good news"

Les Bolstad is a fun course and I'm glad they're trying to save it. It will also be better for population density in that area than most development options. The one concern is the budget. The course has some serious issues and I wonder if $7.5 million will be enough to do it in a way that doesn't seem like a band aid. If you're investing in the course it's important to do it right so that you're not just pushing the problem down the road a few years.

Why does a university need to own and operate a golf course? Couldn't they sell the course and use the proceeds to reduce student tuition?

jd55604 - This is the University of Minnesota you're talking about here. The words "reduce student tuition" do not exist in their vocabulary. The $ gained from selling Les Bolstad would just be blown on building a PRACTICE arena for the basketball team. Which do you think is a better option?

Also jd - The U of M has a very good Turf Management program that has pumped out many graduates who have gone on to be golf course head greenskeepers as well as managers of big time college's athletic fields. Since the football and now baseball fields have now gone to artificial turf, the golf course and soccer fields are the only remaining facilities for these students to learn, train, study on. So the golf course does also serve as an educational tool. Besides, how many more boring, cookie cutter apartment buildings do we need? Keep the great mature oak trees all around Bolstad.

commonsens4u, that's like a university building an oil refinery to supplement their chemical engineering program. If our University system is unwilling to cut out some of the most egregious pieces of bloat like this then the whole system is doomed to collapse.

jd....I think you have a little too much sugar in your diet. The sky will not fall at the U if they renovate Bolstad instead of selling it off to the highest bidder. OK? Have a great afternoon.

Dear Harvey McKay and Tom Lehman, your University is calling for help here. I suspect they'll get the rest of the donations needed to do this from the Alumni, there's only about a billion dollars in their hands to invest in programs like this. If they can do TCF Bank they can get this fixed.

I've never used the course, but the land in and around it is very pretty, especially in the fall. I am glad they will keep the trees instead of bulldozing them for apartment buildings.

@ jd55604 almost every large state school has it's own golf course.
