MAX SHORTELL is an authentic major college Division 1 quarterback and good guy. MarQueis Gray is an authentic major college Division 1 wide receiver and good guy who Gophers coach Jerry Kill inexplicably insists on playing out of position at quarterback. Kill's choice to be the starting quarterback when Gray is cleared to resume playing will determine whether or not good guy Jerry Kill is an authentic major college Division 1 head football coach who knows how to give Minnesota the best chance to win games.

It will also reveal Coach Kill's integrity on whether he follows through with his commitments to his players, which he has been very good about so far.

Bottom line is your quarterback needs to be able to throw more than five yards downfield accurately and Gray can't do that. PERIOD.

Kill & Company will go with whoever/whatever they think gives them the best chance to bring the program forward and win games. Period. And I certainly trust Coach Jerry's judgement more than forum guy SeaShark.

Shortell is a quarterback while Gray has the athleticism to play multiple positions. There is is no reason Kill can't find a position on the field for Gray if Shortell continues to play well.

tbtbit17881: Coach Kill is indeed a person of honor and integrity, but he doesn't promise or guarantee playing time to any Gophers football player. MarQueis Gray has failed in his 5 years at the U to take command of the quarterback position, and if Max Shortell continues to demonstrate in practice and on game day that he's Minnesota's quarterback of RIGHT NOW and THE FUTURE then Kill will have to resist treating Gray with senior deference, get him on the field as a wide receiver or tight end, and continue with Shortell at quarterback. MarQueis Gray is a good guy and fine student-athlete, but he couldn't beat out Adam Weber for the starting quarterback job and he hasn't consistently shown in 2-plus years as the starter that his presence behind center gives Minnesota the best chance to win football games. So unless Shortell gets injured or his talent and skills completely vanish, Kill has a relatively easy decision to make about who starts at quarterback when Gray is healthy enough to play again.

Max Shortell looked good for a half against a second tier team unprepared for him. Let's see what he can do against a couple of teams prepared for him before any annoints him the savior.

gray is on crutches? there is no controversy. if gray was on a 3 game losing streak, i might discuss switching him out.

Gray will make a great tight end in the pros with no chance at QB. He should have insisted at staying at end for his future and it would have also improved the Gophers. Shortell should have been honing his skills last year and he would be more comfortable this year. Gray could be worked into the backfield with Shortell, for many options and that is what the coaches should be doing. The Vikings have a great athlete, Webb, on the bench as he too should be helping the team as a receiver-back!
