What a farce. County workers usually don't just work for a couple years then quit. The rise in Minority's in the burbs is fairly resent. Give them some time to retire, and IF there just as qualified as the next guy. They will/should slowly change that number. Why would the paper not know this? Because it's about shock, and awe. Not journalism.

I hope they hire the most qualified persons regardless of their ethnicity.

Simple solution, figure out how many people the county can afford to hire, figure the percentage of the minorities in the area and fire the correct number of white and hire minorities to fill their position. Now everyone is happy, problem solved.

Where is it written that a workforce has to match exactly the 'diversity' of the population it serves? This is just another liberal invention that keeps getting repeated in the hope that those who hire will fall for this new 'requirement' that the numbers must match. As others have posted, you should hire the best possible, most qualified candidates regardless of 'diversity'.

it is hard to hire someone who will not apply for the job. also don't they get extra points just for being a minority?? putting them ahead of someone who isn't a minority.

Considering the lower graduation rate among certain groups, that might be a factor in getting hired. Education, Education, Education. Stay in school and get that degree. Even if its only high school. Its not that hard.

Wouldn't hiring quotas based on race be, you know, illegal?

There does not appear to be a pool of minority candidates from which to hire. What are the respective college populations for the positions within County government. Many such jobs require a 4 year degree and a majority of positions are in social services-public health or public safety. What are the numbers of minorities getting these degrees? IT positions are being integrated into County structure but these positions often pay less that private companies. If representative diversity is the goal, breaking down barriers that lead to the educational pursuits would be a better venture.

Enough of the liberal "guilt trip". All people have an equal opportunity to succeed in this state. Any quotas or govt regs are discriminatory.
